City site recommendations
How exactly does the game calculate where to recommend you have your settler build a city?

I've never followed the recommendations in any Civ game, because I can make my own plans and they've always seemed a little off to me. But what I am seeing right now is beyond mind-boggling.

The game is recommending I build my 2nd city halfway across a huge map smack between one of my opponents' capital and the 2nd city he just put down - in order to get, as near as I can tell, an iron deposit. It's seriously giving me a "build here" recommendation on all land hexes surrounding that particular iron deposit. And I have unexploited iron near my capital as it is.

Soo,... yeah, does anyone have any insight into what factors the game takes into consideration for that? Is it just completely broken? Am I missing something? I'm really curious.

It probably wise to just ignore it until they've fixed it.
In my last game, I was consistently advised to found my cities 2 tiles away from my capital or in the ocean. Which doesn't even work (I've tried :)).

well since I've played civ from the very first version of it, I can tell you it values water tiles, and luxury resources etc.

place youre city close to a river, and lots of grassland, having atleast 1 resource and my personal favourite a mine you need to sort of think yourself, dont always go where the recomandation tells you

Yeah, I've been playing since the original (1992, DOS version) as well and I've never followed their recommendations in any game in the franchise - but you could usually at least see some of the logic behind it. This, though, struck me as very bizarre.

I was just wondering if anyone had any insight into the factors and weights they were using for it this time aroud. But I'm guessing that it's just completely broken at the moment....

It's not suggesting where you place your next city, it's showing locations on the map where a city might do well based on the resources surrounding it, but there is no consideration given to strategic value or feasibility of placing a city there. Generally you should have a bunch of locations marked as potential city sites.
