The best counter for Berserkers are Crossbowmen behind anything that can take hits. Range counters everything. On the topic of Pillaging like I said Berserkers have 2 movement in normal terrain, they can't expliot openings as well as knights can. Plus you take two times longer to get them to the enemy.
You're not getting the point. Point is they're about as good as Knights give and take a little, BUT the whole point of a UU is to give an Advantage; NOT an Alternative.
The Berserkers are "attack and retreat" units (cos they'll get killed quickly o/w). Mostly useful for making room for your knights, pikemen, etc. to actually perform an inland siege.
In comparison, the Samurai (a comtemporary unit in Civ VI) is much better at attacking and fortifying.
Crossbows annihilate Berserkers.
IMO Berserkers are good at attacking maybe a fortified unit inside enemy territory. Yes, pillage a farm or two for health and to keep going. But after that you want to retreat them pronto
sure they were a menace back in those days, but thats about it, just another menace
berserkers follow same line, sure they where fearsome, usefull? i think not, quite the opposite in fact
roman legionnaires where far more effective in getting the job done they where created for
berserkers? madman just chopping away and hope it accomplishes something
The idea that the Vikings were nothing but berserk raiders is literally just a demonisation due to a single event in English history. In reality, their craftsmanship and technical achievements were really quite impressive.
It'd have been nice if the Viking civilisation would have depicted them as explorers and traders, more than just raiders, but I guess stereotypes are easy.
Can't they also go into the ocean earlier than other civs? So thats kinda the explorer aspect at least.
Whilst true, it's literally only the tech immediately before, so it's not exactly a huge bonus.
