Sorry for the necro but I just discovered how to win with a good score. Believe it or not but you have to go for a score victory.
Having said that and seeing that it makes logical sense to the neophyte I must say it took me a while to figure it out. Here's the rub: there is no score multiplier for ending before turn 500 (standard speed).
So to get a high score on my standard sized continents world on standard speed at king difficulty I captured all cities but one capital and made sure not to take any civics bonuses to tourism and I've only converted my own cities to my religion. I am at turn 469 with a score of 2,569 so far.
I found this thread looking to find the calculation for the "Empire" stat. I am currently replacing all possible terrain upgrades with farms in case the population of my empire affects the score, as in previous versions. I have not found anything so far that breaks down how much of the stat is the percentage of the land of the world owned by my civ and how much is something else.
I was shocked to realize there is no turn-of-victory bonus multiplier as in previous versions. And the previous score heaviness of building or capturing wonders is totally gone. I have found I pretty much ignore wonders in this version unless it gives extra civics slots or something else like that. The science system pretty much removes any desire to build scientific wonders if you know how to manually and successfully work the two advancement trees to earn eureka moments for each tech and civic. I realized that most of the time once I feel I have a good spot for one of those wonders I've already earned much if not all the bonus it would apply to my civ.
So, now you know. For high score go for a maximum-turn-limit score victory. If you find out how the weights work in calculating the "Empire" score stat I'd love to know. I plan to experiment through play and see what comes out of it but I know some folks out there get dev kits or whatever for modding games and I am just not that into it. I'd love to see the real numbers so when I start aiming for the five-thousands for score I can plan for it from turn one.
Thanks!

THANK YOU!!! I just today won a Domination victory on turn 50, which in previous versions of Civ would have given me an insanely high score. Instead I got ... 93, Dan Quayle. I'm glad to see this is a (dumb, dumb, dumb) design change in Civ VI, and nothing more.
