Same goes for building an army and sending it to the enemy borders. Your soldiers travel by foot with swords and crossbows for hundreds of years, reaching the enemy on the next age, only to be greeted with cannons and musketeers.
Speak for youself but I've got some trade going, working with City States to improve my Culture (that's the victory I'm going for), fighting off Barbarians left and right trying to gain a foothold in my area and trying to keep my neighbors happy so they don't wage war on me and their people visit me.
And I suck at Civilization games!

Enjoy the game and the jouney to get where your going. Instead of just playing for the end game.
Well... That's ironic isn't it?
Gotta wonder why you buy a slow game when you ain't got the patience for it though. 4X games tend to be slow.
I find myself spending far too much time having to micromanage military units in the beginning which also slows the game down considerably. Maybe if they had a way to automate 'barbarian killer' units that go around killing barbarians it would help. Micromanaging a dozen military units to chase around barbarians is pretty irritating and a waste of time, especially when those barbarian camps keep popping up so often. Turning off barbarians would probably speed it up for you.
