Tell AI not to build near my borders
It kind of irks me that the AI can demand to me not to build near them, but I cannot do that to them. Especially when I've conqured my continent and stopped 'warring', just to have them set up a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ town just to spread their religion and walk around with their low-end units.

It's a bit of a shame that I'd have to go to war just in order to avoid that happening.. It was the same in Civ 5.

I'm not sure you can't, but it doesn't matter anyway, because if you can, they will just ignore the request at their leisure anyway.

I don't see why the AI would be programmed to ignore my demand if I have bigger guns.

Well, Civilization AIs have never been very smart, and Civ6 is no exception.

So you'd rather not have that feature just because you do not trust the devs to add in AI logic that would do a quick strength check?

You can demand this, but the option doesn't always appear. On the diplomacy screen, different options appear under the "Demand" button. Telling them not to settle near you is one of the options.

I don't know why it isn't always there, though. You can also tell them to stop spreading their religion through your lands, and to stop plundering your archaeological sites.

If they agree to do so, and then don't, then they will get a diplomacy penalty, just as you would if you promise to do something and don't follow through.

there is a way to "demand" it. Go to their leader screen... will have a small button with "lets discuss something" or something like that (I don't know how is in the english interface)

Edit: See above post xD

That's great! I just completed my first playthrough, and never saw it as an option in the Demands tree. Hopefully the conditions becomes a bit more transparant in the future!

The option doesn't appear all the time, but you can demand them like you can demand them to stop converting your cities to their religion. They would also ignore your request like you can ignore theirs.
On a related note, has anyone else had the thing where there's some empty land ignored by all AIs for hundreds of years and as soon as you take a settler over there they rush a settler out to try to claim it before you?

And then when they get their city down one turn earlier than you, yes they complain you settled too close to them. I just said eff it and used my huge gold reserves to unwisely purchase all the tiles I could to squeeze them out.
