Your laptop does not have a dedicated GPU, it uses the integrated intel graphics on the cpu die, and both share system memory. The minimum system specs call for a 1 gb graphics card and 4 GB system memory.

Thank you for replying!
What does this mean in layman's terms?
How do I go about fixing this? Is it possible?

No, your external drive wont help you; there is a difference between storage such as that provided by a hard drive and memory modules, hard drive page files are simply too slow for real time access by the CPU.

Assuming you can fit one, you would need to buy a dedicated laptop graphics card that meets or exceeds the minimum specs, then slot it into the bottom of the laptop. It may be possible to get the game running just by plugging in larger memory modules, but you would be better off buying a cheap dedicated card if it will accept one. However, doing either will void any warranty.

Doing a tiny bit of research, it seems like laptop does not have a graphics card slot, and using external graphics card seems more complex than I'm able to do confidently.
Thank you for the help. Is there anything you could reccomend as a good course of action from here? Any advise or help would be greatly appreciated.

im haveing the same problem but i have a gpu and its a GeForce 9800 GT

If your laptop does have a discrete graphic card, you'd probably have to change the switchable graphics settings so that civ runs with nvidia/amd instead of intel integrated graphics.
In the case of Nvidia, I think it's called Optimus. You can normally access these menus by right-clicking the desktop.

You have to buy a new computer. Thats your only option.

That is not entierly true, there is a very very different option with a external graphic card, but it is a lot of work.

Link to give you some pointers of all you'd have to do here:
External GPU and How to do it[www.pcworld.com]

This would be somewhat costly as you'd need to buy a graphic card.

Easy way: Buy a decent desktop or a good enough laptop for it.

As everyone else points out - If updating your Intel HD iGPU (Integrated on the processor, not a dedicated graphics card) doesn't let you run Civ VI at all, then you're looking at buying a new laptop.

You CAN invest in an external box with a graphics card, but the performance on those is... questionable at best. You're much better off in the grand scheme looking at either a new laptop with a dedicated graphics card that supports Civ VI, or look into a desktop.

In the meantime you may want to refund Civ VI while you can. You're not going to be able to enjoy it much anyway, so you might as well pool that cash for your upgrade, and then come back later.

I have the same problem (game crashes with 'no compatible graphics device found', but I think I do have a card good enough: what am I missing? I've got 8Gb system memory (4 required), I'm running DirectX 12 (11 required), and my video card has 1013Mb dedicated memory ( 1000 required). Here's the output from dxdiag:

DDI Version: 10.1
Feature Levels: 10_1,10_0,9_3,9_2,9_1
ie. you graphic card does not support DX11 hardware features required by this game, also you CPU is below minimal requirements i think so you need to but new PC for this game.

So I'm _running_ DirectX12, but the card is really only supporting DX 10? Huh. Thanks for the input.

How is the CPU below requirements, BTW? The requirements I think are "intel Core i3 2.5 Ghz or AMD Phenom II 2.6 Ghz or greater", and I have 2.5: "Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2450M CPU @ 2.50GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.5GHz"

anyways, thanks for the feedback, the card support seems a show-stopper :(

OP your Intel card is an HD3000. It is NOT DX11 compliant as such you cannot run the game on your laptop
