Walmart selling it early.

I have the game preordered on steam and it is now already downlowded, so I am counting down the seconds until i can play. I went to walmart last night ( Oct 18th) and I saw a whole bunch of copies of civ 6 prominently displayed. This is the full game, not a preorder. I asked an employee why they could sell it now when the release date is the 20th and he did not know that it hadent been released yet. I considered buying it just to play early, but since I already have my preorder I will just wait.

Most likely the games are locked at the register.

No matter where you buy the game you still have to play through Steam, and wait for Steam to allow you to play. IIRC.

This. I have had it happen before where I see something like this and rush to take advantage, an employee assumes it must be for sale, rings it up at the register for me then informs me they aren't authorized to sell it yet.

It's usually behind a locked display, that has been my experience at least. Although I know many people from my hometown that would have schemed elaborate ways to distract an employee and make off with it.
