Don't reroll. Restart from main menu. When you get something else than your civs preferred starting location it means there are other civs in game competing for that start. Case in point, my game, where Canada took the only valid tundra starting point, and I as Russia was given a mountain maze far from any tundra to the north and south. Alternatively pick deliberately civs that will not challenge your civs preference. Re-rolls repeats the problem.

I purposefully kept out civs that would compete for tundra. Still getting put into mountain mazes with no tundra.

Well if there are no valid tundra starts, that is what you would get, even with no competing Civs. Don't know why reroll doesn't open options though. So still, I would recommend main menu restart.

Currently played a game as Canada. Didn't start in Tundra, but it was only 5-6 hexes away and plopped down a few cities that made sense. Honestly that's probably for the better, yeah they have bonuses to make tundra not suck, but it's not like tundra is better than grasslands/plains.

It is less about not being near tundra and more about every start being a mountain maze.

Why would you want to start in the tundra? Even as Canada you have no reason to be there until Hockey Rink, which comes ridiculously late.

If you don't want a mountain maze start set the age of the world to Old in advanced settings. That will cut down on the mountains, hills, and volcanoes.

I have been doing that.

Figured it out! Don't let Pachacuti be in your game! It doesn't matter what world age you select because he'll just force spawn a bajillion mountains for no reason other than to ♥♥♥♥ over the whole world.

That's interesting. And useful.

That's good to know. My first GS game I played as the Inca and I thought I was super lucky to have spawned in the middle of a labyrinth of mountain ranges. Guess it wasn't luck!
