So here is my big issue in the game, Map generation?
I feel the game is so map dependent as to how difficult the game will be that I can start on Immortal, romp some empires and own the continent because it puts me in the perfect place to do so. Distances to other ai's and correct terrain. Also circumstances such as the ai army is geting it's but wooped by barb horseman on the other side of their cities. resources around the capital and good huts exposed such as builders, and early faith.

Likewise, I can start a game on prince with enemy barb camps with horses, and ai such as gilgamesh too close, and nothing but crap terrain around my city, mountain locked with tundra or plains with no significant good bonuses close by. And get my but wiped.

Does anyne else feel this way too. That the starting map, ai enemies selection, AI placement can pretty much determine how well your game will go regardless of the difficulty level?

If you want to play really hardcore and ironmode then restarting the map may not be an option and could seem like cheating, since technically you could win without it. But I see why you would want to do that if you insist on a peaceful game. On Deity you always need to invade your neighbors, and as quickly as possible, or the technological difference between you and the AI becomes too massive to overcome later in the game. Similarly on lower levels, if you have a bad map start, you also have to invade and be very aggressive, until you have at least 12 cities. And don't bother making too many settlers, as each settler becomes progressively expensive to make and thanks to scaling making new cities with settlers is not very useful after turn 70 on standard games. I would keep settler built cities to maximum of 3 and then spam military units. Also focus primarily on military techs until you are dominating geographically with 12-16 cities on a standard continents map.

The map sizes are way smaller than they were in Civ V, and that's what is causing this huge overlap.

Not exactly true. The 4 smaller maps(duel, tiny, small, standard) are bigger in civ 6 than they are in 5. The Large map is smaller in 6 but not by much, the huge map is smaller in 6 by quite a bit.
There are several reasons that civs start where they start at and map size isnt really one of the major ones.
You can easily change the minimum start distance in the files or just get a mod called Custom starting distance(gives you the option to change start distances at the advanced setup screen)

I can make do with a crappy start location. It adds a fair bit of challenge to the game. What I'm not happy with is how often AI spawns right next to me. I restart if I find ANY civilization within 5 turns of settling.

Especially since it means I have to compete with the AI for valuable goodie-huts and city state envoys. You start near the Cree and you don't get a shot at any city state envoys. And conquering city states is not an option because their cities are usually garbage, and you don't get their suzerain bonus.

Yeah, I kind of agree. (But not with the crappy start location. If it's crappy I am not all that interested). But the AI being too close? I play on a huge maximum size map and I usually take two or three AIs out in the start menu. Still I have not one but 2 civs in close proximity before turn 10.If I meet them before turn 5 (and I have) I'm through. I think the game is deisnged this way to force you into a conflict early on so if you're a peaceful builder, tough luck.

Long ago someone posted a way to tweak the code that dictates where AI's spawn. (putting them further away from you at the start.) I tried it but it caused OTHER probelms. When the AI's are further away there's more "Fog of War" between you and the barbarians spawned like rabbits on viagra. When th barbs don't have as many targets to pick on they come right after you. (I also think they are coded to atack the living player first, but I can't prove that)

As far as distance to the next civ, you can edit the file GlobalParameters.xml and changes the min distance for civs (assuming you installed it in the default folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization VI\Base\Assets\Gameplay\Data\GlobalParameters.xml). Edit the line "Replace Name="START_DISTANCE_MAJOR_CIVILIZATION" Value="9"" The default value is 9 but I changed mine to 15. Experiment with it and see what you prefer.
