Perhaps in preparation for Anton's departure Ed Beach has taken back the lead developer title, but I expect that is temporary.
In any profession you want to move on up. He's been Civ lead since Civ V's first expansion. Or earlier perhaps? Soon after Jon Shaffer left I imagine. Firaxis and Ed is surely looking to replace Anton. I hope one of those guys who did Beyond Earth will take over. David MacDonough(?) or Will Miller.
That was my impression as well. He has never been the lead designer of the full game. I mean that is largely a ceremonial thing, being the lead of the projects he has been on IS a big deal. But I don't think he ever had the "Civ 6 Lead Designer" title.
By "he" I was referring to Ed Beach. Not Anton Strenger
That goes double for Firaxis.
I think they are expanding their horizons beyond Civilization with Midnight Suns (in partnership with Marvel/Disney), which is great.
But thankfully studios like Amplitude and Mohawk are giving Firaxis some competition with HUMANKIND and Old World. I think it's healthy
Many in the gaming industry like to say they "love their jobs" especially on YouTube or Twitch streams, but I expect it's more like any other job than you think.
They aren't getting paid to play games all day - that's what Twitch streamers do
