The warrior line gives a straight defensive strength upgrade, while a ranged unit can be so much more useful. Up to you.

Catapults/artilery.

Ranged units, if only to hit the enemy before they get a chance to pillage tiles. Don't bother with artillery either - they seem to get a damage penalty against units compared to archers and such.

(They also happen to be useful for mobility if you need to move out and attack something)

I'd take a ranged unit over melee any day, assuming they are relatively same strength as the attacking units. You can easily outmaneuver the AI, and most importantly, you don't take damage when you attack. Also, if you are in dire straits vs barbarians, you might need to cower in your city, in which case they might be > one hex away, out of range for melee.

Ranged units lose their range though, while the artilery line gains even more range.

The reason I mention the melee line is bc once you are taking city damage, it's best to put a melee unit in there to boost defensive stats for the city and its walls. This is assuming the AI hasn't just won the game against you with their rush. You can buy an extra couple of turns this way.

Artillery loses its efficiency against units as well. In he modern era they are practically useless compared to just ramming tanks into units to get rid of them.

Gotta build those corps and armies late game for most everything tbh. Arty units included. They are ridiculous with balloon spam + medics.

So use archery line units? I did noticed that artillery loses its efficiency against units especialy in modern era.
And what about unigue units? None of them are good? But you need upgrade them so...

Considering ranged units in modern era are one tile "ranged units", arty never loses its uses. In fact, ranged is quite useless from a combat strength standpoint after field cannons.

Arty and horse units are the only lines with proper upgrade lines. Everything else including spears are bunk at some point (though spears are much better than warrior line end game...and as mentioned above, machine guns are trash).

Poor Jim. One bad car-ride with the Sheik and there goes his top billing...

Archers, Cross bow and Machine guns are effective. Build walls too.
