-34 warmonger penalty for all civs due to attacking a city state
I have been loving Civilization 6, but if there is a disappointment it is the AI. It seems basically exactly the same as the other civilization games. Case in point, it is 900AD. I had a nice little peninsular and managed to claim it for myself with 5 cities. Apart from a city state along a river between my cities, so i declared war on this city state (no CB option vs city states?).

At this point i had met 6 other civs.

Egypt & Scythia were both unfriendly
china, Sumeria & Rome all neutral
Japan was friendly

Within a few turns of me starting war Egypt, Scythia, China, Sumeria and Rome all denounced me. Japan shifted to neutral. All of them have a -34 for warmongering. How ridiculous is that! I may have have well have dropped a thermonuclear bomb on someone for the global outrage me declaring war on a simple city state has caused ( first declaration of war i have made). The war was over after a few turns, i took the city but still everyone hates me.

What did i do wrong? Is there a way to declare war on a city state without everyone hating me?

2 turns later, Japan denounced me. What a joke!

Nope. You declared war in an era that isn't the ancient one. Ergo everyone and their pet dogs hate you now for being a warmongering warmonger, who wages war like a common warmonger.

In all seriousness though, diplomacy is shot as it is and even formal wars with proper casus belli wreck your reputation like nobody's business. Just expect to have no meaningful interaction with the AI if you ever take anything at any point beyond the ancient era.

- Denounces you! (Warmonger)
Rhudda Oct 30, 2016 @ 4:42am
Well, yes, obviously they still hate you. First, it takes time for diplomatic effects to wear off - that goes for positive effects too - and second, there is a warmonger penalty for taking cities.

Also, what the year is doesn't matter. What's important is the era you're in, as the later that is, the more severe the warmonger penalty. Should've taken that city state a lot earlier.

I am 1 tech into the renaissance era! bah!! i wonder if i was still in medieval if it would have been much less of a penalty.

I just dont give a F... about this. the AIs are broken by design... denouncing you one turn, demanding luxurys the other turn, offering you ridiculous trades a turn later... spamming the landscape with crappy melee and religious units! just conquer them, burn them, raze their cities and revel in the wailing of their women.... :D

Yep, that is my strategy this game now. I was aiming for a science victory but all my cities are quote productive. I also have an army of battle hardened swordsmen and a couple of knights, along with a few catapults after taking that city state. May as well let the world burn. I will give them reason to denounce me!!

What i find a bit strange is, that, when you are playing the game RIGHT, you just CANT prevent a cultural victory now...

Wrong.

It's worse.

Denouncing is NOT the same as declaring war. Wait to see if they declare war 6 turns later. I had Arabia flip flopping between denouncing and praising me for most of a game without ever having a war with them.

Even if they do declare war on you they may not Casus Belli, and they will suffer War Mongering penalties for that. The Civ game program gives greater War Mongering penalties the later in the game it is, and governments/policies can have an affect also.

Im at -67 penalty now some 500 years after my last war. I blame England for keeping placing cites right next to mine.

To be fair even if you take out City States in the ancient era, it won't be long before everyone resents you for it anyway.

I was America i got nukes first and suddenly i didn't care about the warmongering penalty. Weird...

the whole diplomatic approach to this game seems super weak. I'm new so maybe i'm missing something, but you can't seem to bargain at all unless you're trading a spy, resource or borders.

I would see Russia attacking someone. I'd love to say, "hey, I'll come help you fight off Russia and we can be homies" but it's just not built into the game. If I try to defend them, i'm a warmonger. this is probably the most disapointing thing about the game.

well, that, and the previews made it look like there's a cool 3rd person view of the world but it's basically a 2.5d side scroller. ok,, i'll shut up now.
*edit* lol, didn't realize at first i just revived a 4 year old thread. oops
