Civ 6 is picking up my inbuilt cpu gpu, i have a nvidia 980M
In settings it will not let me change my graphics its coming up as Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600. WTF? this is irritating the ♥♥♥♥ out of me to put it mildly. Can anyone explain why the game might be doing this and why it wont use my expensive graphics card which I would like to make some use out of?

You should have the nvidia drivers installed. Use them to create a custom rule for the game to use the nvidia gpu instead of the integrated one.

There should be a setting in your BIOS to disable onboard graphics.

that is not good for a laptop as it uses up the battery in 1 hour.

You should right click on your desktop and click nvidia control panel. There should be a tab in there where you can change the graphics card for a certain program. If you haven't downloaded the drivers I suggest you do it because that's the reason it isn't detecting your gpu.

I have this problem with AMD gpu. Choosing max performance in switchable graphics doesn't change anything. Anyone know how to fix this?

Usually either disable onboard via bios or installing correct drivers fixes this. Regardless of it being amd or nvidia.

My computer is 3 years old, an when i install the latest amd drivers win 10 is crashing. Is this the issue?

Same issue with GTX 970 on linux ... drivers are up-to-date

Disabling integrated graphics in BIOS worked for me. Performance is much better now and I don't have the blank-leader-screen issue.

CIV VI allows you to choose the graphics card you want to use in the graphics settings. Setting that's probably the best way to handle this issue.

I know, but only the intel igpu was shown.

Here are more detailed instructions for Eddie10089's answer. From another game, but presumably would be same for Civ VI.

1) Right-click on Desktop.
2) Select 'NVIDIA Control Panel'.
3) Select 'Manage 3D Settings'.
4) Select 'Program Settings' tab.
5) Click 'Add'.
6) Find 'Civilization VI'.
7) For the 'Select the preferred graphics processor for this program' parameter, select the NVIDIA option.
8) Click 'Apply'.
