How and what is a siege?
I mean I know what a siege actually is irl, but in terms of gameplay I see "X city is under siege" via gossip.

My guess is that it just means X city is taking damage, but I want to make sure there isn't some kind of bonus or strategy involving surrounding a city.

To besiege a city, you have to make sure that all surrounding tiles are covered by control zones of your units. That way, it can't heal itself between turns. I feel cities fall fast enough once you're through their defences that this doesn't matter, but if you're struggling against a strong city or are in a hurry and can't afford a few turns more, try that. Remember that land units don't exert a zone of control on water and that zones don't extend over rivers. Also, ranged units don't really have one. They might control their own tile, but I'm not sure.

So surrounding a city with at least 3 melee units equally spaced will deny a city health regen?

Neat. I will have to give that a go next game. I've usually just stuck to the tried and true method of bombarding a city and waltzing a single unit in, so I'm not surprised I've never run into it myself!

Two on opposite sides are enough if there are no rivers or other bodies of water that interfere. But yeah, I prefer bombardment too.
