Is it impossible for Kongo to win religious victory?
Seems weird to have a civ that just CAN'T win one way. Am I missing something?

No it is not. You must found your religion to be eligible to win a religious victory.

Kongo cannot found religions though. They cannot win via religious path. I don't see the problem though.
easiest way to get diety achievement:
pangea duel.
you play a religion civ, enemy plays kongo.
disable all victory conditions but the religion one.
dont be a dumbass and focus religion.
win

or you could set turn limit to 1.

found city.
end turn.

Yup. While I find it a novel idea, it makes Kongo one of the worst civs, along the same lines as Venice. In fact I'd say Kongo is worse than Venice for a few key reasons. First off, Venice wasn't barred from winning any victory types, although some were more difficult. Kongo loses an entire path to victory, which sucks. Secondly, and this is more important, Kongo has no way to defend against opposing religious victories. Whereas other civs can grab their religion and defend against the player going for a religious victory, Kongo has literally no options to stop it. If you get converted by the religious leader, you just have to hope someone else keeps their religion alive.

@OP, you are correct it is impossible. It is within your power (as Kongo) to delay a religious victory as much as you want by helping the 2nd place religion or hindering the 1st place religion. Granted you do have to hope you and your neighbors don't just get steamrolled by the #1 religion, but that could also be said of domination victory.

So Kongo can't win religious victory... so what? That by itself doesn't make it a weak Civ. It is quite powerful for the culture and science victory paths.

And yes it can defend against religious victory. You wind up with a ton of apostles from whatever religion got to you first. Destroy that civ, and you've now got a religion that is "yours" to displace any outsiders with and defend against them. True, you can't churn out tons of religious units and a really dedicated religious based enemy will convert you in time, but that is true of anybody. The answer is to destroy them or win your culture / science victory first.

Worst? It's not all that hard to win in any other category besides Religion with Kongo. Culture victories happen without half trying. Science - easy. Domination - likewise. Kongo is a GREAT civ to play.

I actually like playing as Venice. You could have as many cities as you wanted without having to worry about the increased cost of policies and techs. Plus the ability to make purchases within puppeted cities was awesome.

Yep. After I tried Venice once they turned into my absolute favorite civ to play. More so after I discovered a mod that gave a one-tile border spread from forts.

Better than that even there is a mod that gives fortified units a possibility to claim a tile
nicholas kongo can defense against a religious victory by manipulating his cities
he gets free apostles from building mbanzas+ theater squares
