I can't build Medieval Walls
Under the production options, I can see Medieval Walls. It is grayed out, and when I hover over it, it says, must have ancient walls. My city does have ancient walls. Is this a bug or am I missing something?

I just got the same thing in one of my cities. It happened when I transitioned into the Modern Era and was in the middle of building ancient walls.

No, just another failure of the UI.

Scroll down in your build list, and at the bottom you will see an option to "repair outer defenses". Basically, if your walls take any damage, you have to do this project to repair them before you can upgrade them.

I think I had that issue in my first game but I quit that one so I can't really give any more info but I did see it. Later on in my other games the issue was that I needed to repair the other wall first after I was invaded. Could be related to that somehow.

Just out of curiosity is this for a city that you attacked and took over? I think that was how it was for me. If so it could be since the walls are destroyed and you are now the new owner of the city and didn't build the first tier wall the game bugs out somehow?

Hmm..that happened to me as well in one of my earlier games - tought it was a bug - but it's not impossible to be a UI thing, assuming OP can confirm

There is also a point where walls become obsolete, but I think it completely removes the option to build them at that point. I was able to fix my city that had this issue by repairing the couple points of damage that were done to it, then it allowed me to continue building upgrades after that

Nope, I just checked and I don't have a project for "Repair Outer Defense". I checked the production list thoroughly and I don't see the option.

This is happening in every one of my cities. One, I took from Scythia, and four of my own. None of them appear to have damaged walls.

Now, I'm wondering if they've gone obselete because I have access to Renaissance Walls. The city the I captured doesn't have the option for Medieval or Renaissance Walls.

So, when I gained access to Renaissance Walls, Medieval Walls became I obselete and were removed from the options. I can't upgrade from Ancient to Renaissance without the Medieval Walls. Therefore, I can't upgrade my walls passed Ancient.

Yeah that's what I am also starting to wonder. Also since a lot of people are saying that the techs are so easy to fly through now it could be a big part of the problem.

If you are one of those people flying through the techs and not building the walls fast enough and if you skip a tier, that could be an issue. For me this is not the case as I build my campus pretty much last so my tech is not super flying. It's still fast even with zero or just 1 campus thanks to the boost system. But I have plenty of time to build all my walls.

This will probably need more testing and feedback.

There is a bonus from something (city state? Policy? I forget) that lets you buy walls using faith but then can no longer build them normally. I'm going from memory here so might be wrong, but its something like that.

Well, that's dumb. We should be able to upgrade to highest available walls. I hope they fix this in a patch.

To confirm my earlier post - yes there is a city state suz bonus that lets you buy city center and military buildings with faith, and reduces the cost of walls, but walls can only be bought with faith.

Extremely powerful bonus, actually. Start new cities with a monument, granary, water mill and wall on the turn you build it. I expect this will get nerfed.

Now that you mention it, i recall there's also an engineer? that builds some walls free for you as well - could also be related.

Also, the project for "Repair Outer Defenses" won't appear until the city has not taken damage for 3 consecutive turns, according to the civilopedia.
