How do you change religions?

Most of my cities follow Islam (founded by a deposed Persian empire). How do I change my state religion to Islam? I didn't bother founding one myself (and it looks like that's no longer an optiion, since all of the Great Prophets are taken)

You take over the holy city for Islam.

I did take over the holy city for Islam (it shows up as "Conquered, founder eliminated" in the religion report). It doesn't seem to have changed my religion.

Then you create some missionaries from the holy city and send them to your other cities. Learn the civilopedia. It answers all the questions most people have about how to do something.

Or else build Holy Sites plus shrines and temples at one your cities that has the religion you want to spread to the rest of your cities. However, building those sites and buildings will take faith to build. You get your first small amounts of faith with certain early civic policies which you then use to build your first Holy Site. You may be able to get some faith in other ways as well without religious buildings.
