Is wonder useless?
After getting beaten badly in prince difficulty, I had to revise on my strategy that I been using since civ 3, spamming wonder. I just check back and it seem like most wonder I can find in the game offer very niche and if not saying borderline useless bonus. Is there any reason to build wonder in this game?

I've been mildly suspicious from the start since it seemed like the perfect bait for a thread, but this has to be a troll...

Civ 5 added religion, but whatever. Leth worded everything perfectly on top of everyone else's responses, so I can't see this thread going anywhere else.

I seem to recall that actually civ4 added religion. There weren't the religion points, but the different religions were tied to different technologies and whoever researched that tech first was the religion founder.

One of the most missused/missplaced wonders is Etemenanki.....
have to explain it every single teamgame why people build it in the wrong city like a city with 3 swamps and build it on top of one.
Thats wasting 2 science, 1 prod only for the tile placed on and usually additional 6-10 science/prod you would get if build in the right city.... which is a city with a lot of floodplains because you only get +1 science/prod on floodplains in the city you build it, but +2 science +1 prod for every swamp empirewide.

Other wonders get missplaced/missused too, but etemenanki makes me realy mad (even i wasn't rushing it) because people just heard it's good, rush it but never read its descrption

Somehow I managed to get at least 1 wonder per city, and I have many cities, with a 4 city start by expanding quickly in ancient era. Some of them have 2 or 3 wonders.

I founded religion with Stonehenge, got +4 faith/wonder. Getting a lot of faith for having built many wonders.

... But that's on Normal difficulty. Impossible to do so on hardest, Deity.

Wonders are a bit waste of time really... It's just visually appealing. Ancient temples are the best looking wonders. Temple of Zeus gives military units, good when you expend at the cost of creating new units... If you have time to finish before you get crushed.

It's up to you, just don't bother if you can't get one or two best from early Ancient Era, if you don't go for aesthetics. Though for a culture victory, definitely try to get at least 1 wonder per city.

Wonders are not a waste of time, you just need to actually use the benefits.

One thing, religious victory is not only victory. If going for a cultural vic. then you need wonders and more than 1 or 2. but you need to choose the right wonder. just building wonder to build a wonder is total waste of time and effort.

Flexing on the AI is always a good reason for it

fair, but it opens you up to the rage of an AI finishing a wonder before you, in which case you must swear to nuke them

Great Zimbabwe is an easy wonder to get because the AI's don't seem to plan ahead for it. Once you build it, put a spy in that commercial district (or next to it) and you'll catch *lots* of enemy spies; it's a magnet for them. :)
