I like the variation.
Some of the modes I do not touch.
So in this way, game modes are no different from civilization/leader packs or expansions.
The problem with all the other content is it really only gets used by the player. The AI hasn't been programmed to really use them so it's really kinda pointless.
I hadn't thought of that, it's an interesting point, though i guess Civ isn't the only game to do that, most AI doesn't seem to be very good anywhere. Not sure why there's so much fear of a super AI taking over the world someday if this is what it looks like now.
I have not personally played any of them yet. I might do the barbarian one when I start a new game here soon.
I might get into Heroes, Corporations and Barbs. But honestly I am fine with base game.
I will give you if AI isn't building corporations then it's bugged, but just because you don't find secret societies interesting doesn't mean they don't work well. They work extremely well if you use them correctly.
I greatly enjoy using these modes. They are very much part of the game, however, YOU get to decide what your game looks like. I prefer marathon games. You may prefer quick games. Very much the same game, but different rules. The same goes for these modes: they are there for your enjoyment. Pick them if you like them, don't pick them if you don't. :-)
Agreed, They are OP and they just make the player stronger...just like monopolies...the game needs mechanics to make it harder, not easier since the AI is aleady pretty horrendous. Feels to me Firaxis is just adding "cool" mechanics. but they dont adjust the AI...this was pretty obvious after releasing the monopolies - AI never build even single industry and it was even bugged to the point they stopped building luxury improvements (either they dont test the game enough with new modes or they just dont care at all). This game would be so much better if they tried to make the AI decend instead of developing new mechanics. Vast majority plays this vs AI anyway.
As far as I know, only two Civs lose their unique building to a Secret Society, the Ottomans (Grand Bazaar gets replaced by Great Vault), and Arabia (Madrasa gets replaced by Alchemical Society). However, neither Civ wants to take that Society. Ottomans are pure warmongers and want to have Vampires as a good beatstick with siege towers, and Arabia wants to take Voidsingers because of the stacking bonuses to get other yields from Faith. In fact, their unique building synergizes with that Society. The Grand Bazaar makes it easier to afford resource-costing units, thus making Vampires stronger, and the Madrasa gives Faith from adjacency, which the Voidsingers convert into other yields. If you're actually taking Owls on Ottomans or Hermetic on Arabia, you're doing something wrong.
