Make sure your system is updated if you play on an older system.
The mods shouldnt be a factor anymore since the game mechanics solved most issues and even tell you before playing that X mod isnt working.
If PC is updated, then do a verify game files on steam and delete the mod folder before you run a game could fix the issue.
To answer your question if the updates broke civ.
No. It fixed civ.
Ether the release was not party to the insider program or as always, I blame macrosuk.
As long there is no fix, Civ died for me
Preface, since some low-IQ individual always says it's mods when this game breaks: I have never subscribed to or installed a single mod for any version of Civ 6, and neither has the friend I typically play against.
Now, the situation: both of us can launch single-player games without issue, running any/all DLC, scenarios, you name it. HOWEVER, when we attempt to start a multiplayer game we both receive the dreaded "Mod Failed to Load" message and the game will not start.
The plot thickens: the game works fine if we both de-activate the Gathering Storm expansion and run vanilla Civ 6. So the issue is clearly with that particular expansion, and re-downloading it will fix the problem, right?
Wrong. Re-downloading/installing the DLC didn't work. We both verified the Steam cache and found no errors. Deleting various caches (mods.SQLite, etc) didn't work. The game is just broken... but (in our case at least) ONLY for multiplayer.
