If you don't want to deal with religion, don't take the prophet and don't found one. And then just ignore other apostles and missionaries coming to your lands.
Your game actually ends up being a lot quieter if you get a religion, then spread it to your core empire, and turtle.
Without a religion, you become a prime target for everyone else's religion and the AI just centers almost every incursion on your turf.

Unzip it into documents/my games/civilization VI/mods
Religions Preq contains 2 files which you can open in a text editor like notepad if you want to double check whats inside or make changes.
Changes.modinfo just tells the game what files it needs to load and sets a mod id.
Runits.sql changes the tech requirement for apostle and missionary to future tech.
Doesn't technically disable religion but should prevent anybody from spamming missionaries and apostles until very late
– The link does not work anymore.
– What would be the path to put the file to on a macOS system (10.15)?
UPDATE Units SET Cost=ROUND(Cost*100.0) WHERE PurchaseYield='YIELD_FAITH';
All Faith units are 100 time more expensive and still increase in cost with each unit if the produce one during the game. Wonders and other thing might produce a free unit here and there but that is it.
A lot of people make the mistake of "Because it exists, I have to have it". Most high end players will tell you to completely ignore Religion unless it factors into your win condition.
The odds of an AI winning a Religious victory, even on Deity are extremely slim, since they have no idea how to accomplish it and will waste all their Apostles converting and reconverting cities.
In general, I find the latest Civs far to complex, esp. for a casual player like me. All the myriads of options, advantages, special rules, benefits for the different nations/leaders etc. And the various ways of winning. Boy, back in the days of Civ 1 + 2, how neat was that: winning by domination, space race or on score! All that diplomacy, religious, UN, culture touristic stuff makes it (too) complicated.
Recommend instead watching content creators or reading guides if you're having trouble with certain concepts (because the in-game tutorial has not been updated since launch).
Obviously, it's up to you, it's your experience, after all.
You need to download the Religion Expanded mod though. It should be near the top on the most downloaded mods.
Once it's installed you can set religions to 0 and disable religious victory.
The only bug is that Saladin still gets a prophet and thus a religion, so he can turn the entire world to his religion if you end up with him as an AI character.
