Can I disable religion?
I want to disable religion. Not just remove it as a victory condition, but remove it completely. No apostles, missionaries, etc...
I hate the endless holy wars and waves of apostles and missionaries. I do not like this and want it gone so please no comments asking why I would want to or the benefits of religion. If there is no way to remove just say that there is no way to remove it. Thanks in advance

Unzip it into documents/my games/civilization VI/mods

Religions Preq contains 2 files which you can open in a text editor like notepad if you want to double check whats inside or make changes.

Changes.modinfo just tells the game what files it needs to load and sets a mod id.
Runits.sql changes the tech requirement for apostle and missionary to future tech.

Doesn't technically disable religion but should prevent anybody from spamming missionaries and apostles until very late

No, you can't.
If you don't want to deal with religion, don't take the prophet and don't found one. And then just ignore other apostles and missionaries coming to your lands.

I don't like dealing with religion either most games. I just speed to the first part of it so I can choose the first step that you keep no matter what religion (Fertile soil) or the one where you get homes and happiness with holy districts near rivers. I'll just stop there, you can't lose that perk you keep that no matter what happens. Then you just let them scamper around with their religion and let them give you their bonuses via their religion.
Thanks gents for the straight answer and the advice. I'll put your advice into practice

Your game actually ends up being a lot quieter if you get a religion, then spread it to your core empire, and turtle.

Without a religion, you become a prime target for everyone else's religion and the AI just centers almost every incursion on your turf.

Might be possible to "disable" it by choosing a late enough starting era - Think Great Prophets (like all Great People) have specific eras they're associated with, so if the game starts after the last one can appear, no religions would be able to be founded

– So does this actually work?
– The link does not work anymore.
– What would be the path to put the file to on a macOS system (10.15)?

You could just use this SQL line
UPDATE Units SET Cost=ROUND(Cost*100.0) WHERE PurchaseYield='YIELD_FAITH';

All Faith units are 100 time more expensive and still increase in cost with each unit if the produce one during the game. Wonders and other thing might produce a free unit here and there but that is it.
I do recommend leaving Religion on though, since you can still benefit from Pantheons and some civs might spread their Religion to your cities which helps your win condition (beliefs like Jesuit Education).

A lot of people make the mistake of "Because it exists, I have to have it". Most high end players will tell you to completely ignore Religion unless it factors into your win condition.

The odds of an AI winning a Religious victory, even on Deity are extremely slim, since they have no idea how to accomplish it and will waste all their Apostles converting and reconverting cities.

Thanks for your answers. I might try the SQL solution, but have figure out first, how to do that.

In general, I find the latest Civs far to complex, esp. for a casual player like me. All the myriads of options, advantages, special rules, benefits for the different nations/leaders etc. And the various ways of winning. Boy, back in the days of Civ 1 + 2, how neat was that: winning by domination, space race or on score! All that diplomacy, religious, UN, culture touristic stuff makes it (too) complicated.
Well, the one way to ensure you never learn is to remove it.

Recommend instead watching content creators or reading guides if you're having trouble with certain concepts (because the in-game tutorial has not been updated since launch).

Obviously, it's up to you, it's your experience, after all.

Yes you can.

You need to download the Religion Expanded mod though. It should be near the top on the most downloaded mods.

Once it's installed you can set religions to 0 and disable religious victory.

The only bug is that Saladin still gets a prophet and thus a religion, so he can turn the entire world to his religion if you end up with him as an AI character.

okay. but you could exclude him from the list of possible opponents!

No one asked me, but... Religion is like a sub-game in the main game that you are forced to play but has nothing fun about it. It's too bad many civs are based on religion, as the whole religious units having more movement and combat time than anything else is annoying. It often has ♥♥♥♥♥♥ bonuses as well. Oddly, I've gotten more religious victories than anything else, so maybe that's why I hate it so much.
