Remember, you can load up an auto-save and resume. Have it auto-save every 2-3 turns.
I think it’s abandon ware now.
I'm playing a huge Earth map with 18 civs and 6 city states with clan barbs creating more city states as the game progresses. I've also got a couple mods loaded. No problems after ending those 2K Launcher entries in task manager.
If you're able to load the game normally (with no launcher changes in steam) and then at the main into menu of Civ 6 Alt Tab over to task manager and end task on the 2K Launcher entries (should be 5 of them.) Then create whatever game you want and you're off to the races.
The 2K Launcher entries don't crash the game if you close them at the main menu and I'm playing on a huge earth map with 18 civ, 6 city states and barb clans with no problems. Also, the city menu scrolls super fast if you've disabled the 2K Launcher which really surprised me as it has a massive impact on in-game performance.
When I saw your suggestion for stopping the constant crashes I got excited because here was someone who played with basically the same setup I like for my games. I went into the Task Mgr and saw no entries for the Launcher. Then, I remembered I'm not sure if it was here or on CivFanatics, but there was a way to remove the Launcher from the game which I did. I still get the crashes.
The point is because a solution works for one person, it is very possible it will not work for another. There are just so many game variables involved and it just seems impossible to isolate the ones that are causing the crashes and fix them. I have to think that the developers HAVE tried to fix them and just gave up and moved on to other projects hoping maybe the game players might find something.
I can say that I have tried many many solutions and none have worked for me. I submitted data, screenshots, logs, etc. to the developers. Nothing. I admire the players who came up with eliminating the city-states being a possible solution. I just didn't try that one though because to me they are such an integral part of the game. But, hats off to them for coming up with that and testing it out.
So, I play other games now more than Civ 6 and when I do play I have the AUTOSAVE set for EVERY TURN. As frustrating as it is, I just find myself constantly rebooting my computer and going through the whole business of getting back into my game. I do have a three strikes rule though - three crashes and I move on to something like Diablo 2 Resurrected or New World. I'm praying for a Civ 7 that might come around some day, but please hurry because I'm 74 and I want to get my hours in. ;-)
I appreciate what you're saying. I was experiencing random freezes while playing and in the beginning of the game was no big deal. But after a while the turns were getting a lot longer and more interesting and since I'm winning I couldn't abandon it.
I tried editing the launcher in steam and upgrading graphics drivers to no effect. I then read about ending the 2K tasks in the manager and finally got some success. When I was going to remove them I noticed the network usage of these tasks and I suspect the crashing has to do with 2K Launcher checking its website for store offers etc. from 2K.
If you would indulge me, I recommend you launch the game with the launcher and then end its task upon reaching the initial in-game menu. My crashes didn't really follow any pattern except when I was trying to have Youtube playing in the background and flipping between programs which seemed to increase the chance of returning to a frozen Civ 6 screen. I believe skipping the 2K Launcher also creates for an unstable Civ 6.
If it does end up working for you please send me a "lucrative" trade route :)
I will select five city states, going alphabetically, different selection each time; if i encounter the specific CTD without crash/error report, i will try four of them, switching one out if necessary, then three, if necessary.
- Large maps only (map type will differ, but i often play terra)
- Playing random leader, AI random leaders.
- Single player
- Will kill the 2klauncher after game launch (if i don't forget..)
- Running Gathering Storm ruleset, and all the vanilla DLCs, no mods, all game modes (barbarians seems to not be able to spawn city states if the cap is reached, even with that game mode active), because that is the way i want to play, so that is the way i want to work.
There is enough comments about city-states, which is why i start with strangling them.
My rig is a lenovo legion, about a year old, so this will count for trying against newer hardware theories in a slim way.
I have been able to play for a good eight hours today without crashing, for my first "report".
I've done the same thing. I end the 2K Launcher after game launch and no problems crashes or freezes.
I'm playing Huge Earth, 18 civ, 5 or 6 city states with clan barbs.
I'm very interested in your experiment. Have you noticed your City production list cycles a lot quicker?
Look forward to your first "report."
sucks to lose two different parts of gameplay, but the fact that after so long i can even play a game again, i'm just grateful to have something.
