Pirates vs AI - 60 turns is too short!
Just finished playing the Pirates scenario vs AI players and certainly felt 60 turns is too fast! Way too fast paced. Just got my fleet going and started really plundering trade routes when it was game over. In addition, all of my AI opponents were defeated by the end of the game (I killed one). Feels almost "arcade-like". Barely got my 3rd relic right before the game ended. Playing on Prince of course was easy, but feels like the game ends right as the fun gets going - got my relics, got some crew, got a few ships, beat back some Barbarians, then "Victory".

I would really prefer a longer game with this scenario. It has potential for sure, but a longer game and more objectives would be cool. "Missions" from the superpower nations like "sink 3 English ships" gets you some crew or a special ship. Having "Pirate Coves" you have to defend or neutral cities you can become a "governor" of (assign a governor that gives you gold, treasure, relics, bonuses, etc) would add some extra gameplay. Things like that wouldn't be hard to add and could make this scenario really fun.

I also feel that your main ship starts off too powerful (though balanced for 60 turns because you have to get going ASAP). A longer game would let you build up your ship as you play, and may make players run from fights. Also, the self-heal seems really overpowered, especially if you have the move after attacking promotion. You can fight and heal every turn, and if you haven't moved and you're in the shallows, you feel invincible against enemy ships.

I like the base idea. Its a breath of fresh air. But feels like it can be so much more and wouldn't take much to get there - starting with the ability to make the game longer than 60 turns.

This is a stupid question. How do I fine scenarios?

totally agree that 60 turns is too short.

- Change turn to Unlimited

- Give players the choice to play all the nations and pirates

- Change the heal after attack option

And you have the best gamemode Civ ever made!

I haven't tried it yet, but this was my fear. I typically play marathon games, and when I heard it was just 60 turns... it seems like it would be too short for me to have much fun in. I really like the idea, and the stream they had the other day made it look fun

I hope they listen to feedback and make an option for longer turns or unlimited with some sort of endgame victory condition

I cannot seem to play
I do not see it in the Scenrios section for singleplayer, and the multiplayer one takes like 30 minutes to "retrieve data from host"
How do you do that?

Setting up to play single player sucks. They should have at least done a setup for it. You need to setup for a local game from the multiplayer menu. Once the panel comes up chose the Pirate Scenario and then go through and setup all the game parameters. Make sure to turn off the play clock if you are doing solo. Once you get things the way you want, make sure to save the configuration so you can load it later for another game.

oh. Didn't think about doing that.

Just finished another game on Prince now that I know what's going on. Felt a little longer because I ended up with somewhere around a dozen ships, "captured" another 15+ ships for my civ playing as Privateer (these ships then just sit there instead of being controlled by their AI parent civ - bug maybe). Ended with 811 total points, 354 treasure, 140 infamy points, 387 Fightin' points, and 7162 gold. No idea if this is good because again, all the AI pirates were killed by the AI by turn 40.

As it stands, it's just not a great solo experience. I could see it fun multiplayer with friends maybe. Certainly some balance needs to be done though. The healing is OP, especially after movement/attacking. At one point some of my ships were able to attack 3 times with a range of 3 (relic+promotion). Talk about unstoppable. I just set up shop in an area that had 5-6 cities nearby and ruled those seas, grabbing new crew, plundering all the trade ships, stealing any good ships that came nearby, and blasting down city walls when available. I'll need to try at higher difficulty. With the privateer ability, I only needed to knock down ships to below halfway and I essentially "killed" them by converting them. With a ship with 3 attacks and a ship with Bring Her Home available, nothing could touch me.

Once again, things just started getting interesting at turn 60. On one side I had a named pirate and several buccaneers, and on the other England had amassed an armada of 10 ships heading my way, and me in the middle with a dozen upgraded ships. Could have been an epic sea battle, but nope, time ran out.

Okay, you can do a few things to make life a little better if you want to play single player. First off you can make a simple edit to PiratesScenario)Config.xml which is in the DLC\PirateScenario\Data folder. Just browse to it from Steam. At line 8 just change the 0 to 1 for the SupportsSinglePlayer entry. You can then start the Pirates scenario from Single player menu.

If you have a sharp eye, you will also spot the max turns. I have set mine to 80 to test. I DO NOT recommend doing this for multi-player since it may cause the game to crash. I'm not looking to play multi-player. Other than the adviser popping up I am 5 turns into the game and running.

It is a nice little 60 turn demo, hope they release a full version of it sometime. My snarky way of agreeing with the original poster.

I agree with most people that 60 turns is way too short. I also agree that the game could be made for longer ones and more activities to do. Great potential here.
TurbulentTurtle Oct 22, 2020 @ 4:32pm
Or at least make an option to how long you'd like it to be

You can, look at my previous post.
