My ally declared war on me
Greece was my long time friend and ally. We spawned next to each other, and have been friends, trading partners, comrades in war; fighting side-by-side with each other since 2000 BC.

So when Greece asked to be allies, I of course said yes.

When Germany, Saladin, Roosevelt, and Gilgamesh all declared war on me on the same turn, my friend and ally Greece was there to have my back. I lost no cities because Greece was supporting me. She took care of my eastern front, leaving me to kill Roosevelt and Saladin.

When the western front was finished and those people were dead, I focused on the northern-eastern front where my friend and Ally was having trouble. Athens had fallen, and Sparta was under siege - until I got there and liberated my ally. After Gilgamesh was dead and we closing in on Germany - my ally suddenly lauched a surprise war on me.

Greece was my friend and ally all game until that one moment when she betrayed me.
What's the point of being allies when your ally and just turn around and stab you in the back?

The AI saw a moment of opportunity to try and take you down and took it.

There can only be one victor, so it was an alliance doomed to fail.

Ever play Avalon Hill's "Diplomacy"?

If you don't forge alliances of convenience early, you're probably doomed because the alliances were formed against you -- you now need to convince somebody to backstab an ally in fear of that his current partner will become too strong if allowed to take your remaining territory.

If you don't break those same alliances of convenience later on, you're going to be the one backstabbed and who loses the game, because there can be only one.

Samething happend to me but with norway and france they were both my allies and delacer war on me for no reson at the same time right after i made peace with germany and most of my troops were dead or half dead it makes you not want to be friendly to anyone

It's impossible for the AI to break a declaration of friendship or alliance to start a normal war with you. The issue is joint wars don't follow any rules or logic, the AI will enter a joint war with anyone at any time, regardless of the situation, rules, or consequences, because it doesn't understand them. It's like trading a resource for the AI, one apple for 50 gold, no problem. Except the apple is a war declaration, which surprises the AI as much as it does you. You can deal with this chaos or turn them off in the game files.

It's still stupid, there should be something like alliance for 30 turns and you have to renew it or nothing. What's the point of the alliance feature even being in the game if you can just turn around and declare war on your ally?

I know that feeling man. It was like in my first CIV games. BUT see it as a lesson to never trust anyone. :bbamsmily:

>>X was my friend and ally all life until that one moment when she betrayed me.

That's exactly how it works. It lasts 30 turns and during that time you obviously can't declare war on your ally, after 30 turns you can renew it. Declaration of friendship is a non-aggression pact and works the same way, lasts 30 turns and during that period you can't declare war on each other.

Like I said, joint wars are bugged and break those rules. Joint wars break all the rules. It should have been hotfixed on day one, makes the game unplayable IMO.

Et tu, Brute?
and the best part is I allied the Aztecs and Greeks as Rome and they both backstab me and it was great (yes I know I'm being scarcastic about it but it did actually happened to me)
