How do I board my units on a ship?
Newb question. But I how do I board my units on a ship? Can it be any kind of ship, for example, the basic galley? Can I board apostles, settlers, tanks etc? Thanks.

Units turn into "ships" if you make them cross water. You have to research the technology first in the sience tree (like sailing and cartography to cross the whole ocean)
Units do not board ships. If you want to move units across water, just move them into a water tile - the unit will automatically become its own transport ship. If you can't move the unit into an water tile then you probably do not have the necessary technology. I forget which one you need, but it is one of the early sea-related technologies (near the top of the tech tree).

You don't board them, you just move them onto water once you've researched sailing (workers only) or shipbuilding (everything else) and they get their own boat. At the moment, embarked units are very tough so you might not even have to escort them, but if you ever want to, just move a galley or any other ship ontop of an embarked unit and link them with the chain button like you would a civilian and a military unit on land.

Transport ships are not a thing in Civ 5 or 6. They turn into embarkation units when going into the water.

You need to research the "Shipbuilding" technology before you can embark units onto coast+lake tiles. Then "Cartography" if you want to be able to travel on ocean tiles.

I've noticed having an embarked unit escorted by a ship doesn't protect it from coastal bombardment. In civ v if your unit was escorted and bombarded, the ship would sustain the damage instead of the land unit. Not so in civ vi. My ranger jumped on a sub and was escorted, but no movement points left after that. An enemy had 3 range units near the same coast. They bombarded my units and the ranger died. I guess the water escorts are only good protection against naval units.
