Vampires
So it says they gain strength from units dying adjacent, is that friendly or enemy, and if enemy, can they just kill them, or does it have to be another friendly unit, or just any unit dying next to them?

Good news is that every enemy unit other than barbarians counts indefinitely. Like those of free cities as well. Thought it was worth to point out as free cities are treated much like barbarians in terms of xp. So with this in mind you can setup strength farms for your fledgelings.

You can get them so strong that they'll be able to solo enemy cities with walls on Deity.

The game states that barbarians count, but I have found this to be false. I've tried several times in several games and it just does not work.

Same for me, i kiled, and had babarians killed next to my vampire, but he kept at 20 strength the whole time

Their listed strength stays the same as the strongest melee unit you've produced. You don't see the damage bonus until you go to attack an enemy (in the same place that terrain, great general, etc, buffs/debuffs show up)
