If you look back at earlier reviews of this game, almost everyone was complaining about the terms of a EULA where they were capturing way more info than is typically done. There was also some talk of unskippable advertisements when you launched the game.
there was, and still isn't, anything wrong with redshell
As for advertisements, you do realise they're a company, and its in a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ launcher that takes you 1 second to click past
Not sure why it's connecting with my preferences for EOS capturing all set to 0.
Saw someone else post on the game "Satisfactory" that this metric collection service was running when it wasn't supposed to, granted they had arguments to disable it on launch, and that they resolved it in a patch.
Also, "Red Shell" was discontinued a month after it was added a few years back. https://www.pcgamesn.com/civilization-6/civ-6-red-shell
1) On launcher startup, the call is established to EpicGames API (for EOS); Also has a frequency of querying every 6m
2) During multiplayer, every 2m the metric.ol.epicgames domain is being queried
There is no option in-game or with launcher to opt out, however all my EOS_Logging settings from EOSOptions.txt are disabled / set to 0. My assumption is that it just suppresses logging to my local machine rather than prevent it from running entirely, which is what I'd want to achieve.
I've now blocked the domains at my pi-hole so it will be interesting to see what happens in Multiplayer...
api.epicgames.dev - Civ 6 Gamer Launcher sets EpicGames API; 6m intervals
metrics.ol.epicgames.com - 2m intervals to EpicGames (google their API for what EOS can retrieve; It's scary)
tracking.epicgames.com - Tracking domain when visiting their website to read API documentation; Was automatically blocked by pi-hole
We know (just imagine what these forums would have been like around that time). What people are telling you is most of those complaints were overblown and worthless. The problems they felt the need to write bad reviews about never materialized, or were a joke.
I hate the rush for every game company to make their own launcher as much as the next gamer, but to complain about them posting updates about their own games and call it 'advertising' is silly.
