Religion Belief Bonuses
I'm sure this question is answered somewhere in these discussions but I could not find an answer so here goes. I chose not to start a religion. Another civ started spreading their religion to me but they did not spread it to all my cites. I started spreading it to the rest of my cites when I gained enough faith to start making missionaries. Now that I have all my cites converted to the other civs religion do I get the same belief bonuses as they do?

Or if you never start your own religion can you ever gain belief bonuses? I realize I can buy items with faith which is a bonus I suppose but other than that is their any other religious benefits/bonuses I can acquire when I don't start a religion? Especially after the great prophets are all gone?

You get some of the bonuses. Founder Bonuses only go to the founder of the religion.

Okay so can I choose the follower beliefs?

I don't think so. It's not your religion. You shouldn't get to make any decisions regarding its teachings.

Though it would be interesting if there was a schism mechanic.

Okay so if I cant choose the follower beliefs is there a way to find out what they are?

You can't choose anything. The religion is what it's founder made it. You get the benefit of their follower beliefs, but not of the founder beliefs. You can find out what they are in the religion tab.

It seems to be very hard to found your own religion, the only way is if you can get the Stonehenge. Otherwise the AI's seem to have hidden advantages and always beat you to them. By the time you can build a holy site, built a shrine, a temple, etc. and start gaining points for prophet, all are taken. In civ 5 I always had my own religion, I don't like to just let them impose their religion in my cities even if I can pick up the crumbs of their follower beliefs. If you don't have your own religion the whole religious game seems pointless. Why would I bother in making apostles, temples etc. to spread "their" religion.

They may have good follower beliefs. Also: I have has little to no problems with making a religion each games.

What do you do to achieve this? Cities grow so slowly, produce so slowly, and first you have to make a scout, then some soldiers, then some builders, then some settlers, then some walls, by the time you can get around to build a holy site, shrine, temple, cathedral etc all religions are taken. Especially if you have to fight early wars with the stupid AI which almost always happens.

dont play always with the same leader. There are Leaders that got some nice bonuses concering faith gain and so on.

Rome and Egypt had no issues. Also: I usually make due with 1 scout, 2 slingers, and 1 warrior then I build a district. Walls I skip untill I need them. Builders and settlers come later.
