I thought my Civ was the only one with American-named cities??
Hi !!

Question?! I'm playing as Roosevelt, established about 6 cities, everything goes well, I then accepted Cleopatra's friendship (her civ was close to mine). Around turn 200, all of a sudden, she established a new city right on an island, accross the channel of where I am, and she named the city «Memphis«. I was shocked. I thought I was the only Civ with American-named cities?? Is that a common thing? (I'm new to Civ franchise).

Thanks :D

learning is a wonderful process.. we all start ignorant. you are hardly an "idiot". civ games in general have alot of knowledge to discover. part of what makes it a good game.

all the best.

Thanks. I finally finished turn 500. I won on settler conditions, large map, 5 civs total. With Roosevelt. I wanted to found as many cities as I could, to see which American city names would come up, and I ended up with, in order.

Washington
Boston
Baltimore
Cincinnati
Philadelphia
New York
Charleston
New Orleans
Cleveland
Detroit
Chicago
Buffalo
San Diego
St. Louis
Houston

And I left Memphis to Cleo.

I've learned so much. I love this game. I'm ready for my 2nd playthrough, harder conditions. I will make my way up.

Any other American-named cities I didn't get? Is the era when cities were found will determine the name? Like, would have I got a Los Angeles for example?

from what i understand.. and this was from dev play before release.. is that all civs have a bank of city names.. that when you create a city, can choose at random. in the case of two of the same civs, but with different leaders.. they both choose from the same bank, but it is still randomized from that bank, and once a city is built, that name cant be used again. the capitals.. will always be the same assigned default name. never random. i believe the size of that "bank" is 20+. iirc.

cheers. glad you're having a good time.

To my knowledge, the majority of cities and towns in the US take their names from elsewhere, often somewhere the original or subsequent settlers had an affinity with.

There are about 35 city names per civ, I believe.

Yea it is random. Tried for pizza party and made 14 cities before I gave up trying to found New York

Centralia is in there? Thats a really really really small town of less than 10 people thanks to the coal fire burning underneath the town. It was the inspiration for Silent Hill.

My question would be: How old are you, and do you live in the USA?

Please don't tell me that you live in the USA, even if you do. That would mean American schools aren't teaching anything. They would need to seriously step up their game.

The USA has it all covered. You should know that if you lived there.

They even have cities called Little Canada.

I kid you not.

Not even Canada does stuff like that.

You can go to the USA and find no less than five cities named London.

Visit London when you are in Kentucky, Ohio, Arkansas, Texas or West Virginia.

*faints* Nashvill finally made it in!?!?!? Yay! But really Sparks? Where/waht is Sparks? Surely more important than Indianapolis or Tampa though, clearly.

Thank you for the list. :)

A lot of American cities gets their name from the old world: For exemple St_Louis, New Orleans are named after French Kings. Providence is also a French word. Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, San Antonio San Jose (and many others) are Spanish Names. Many towns are named after English cities ("New" York for exemple) I wouldn't be surprised if Atlanta's name has been inspired by the Atlantis myth. That's their colonial legacy you could say.

Atlanta was named by J. Edgar Thomson who was chief engineer of the railroad running there from Georgia. He never gave an honest answer as to why he picked that name.

New York was founded as New Amsterdam.
