Stealing Great Works
I have never been able to steal a great work despite the fact that my opponenent (in this case Kongo) has around a dozen or so. Every city that I send a spy to (an I've scouted them all), it says there are no great works of art to steal. I am assuming that they are all in his palace or in temples, but there are more than five great works of writing and he does not have a great library or any wonders that hold great works of writing.

I know that Kongo can keep 5 works in his palace, but like I said he has exactly 11 great works of art (eight writing, 2 portrait paintings, and 1 music), and no wonders that hold great works (only Chichen Itza) nor any in his ampitheatres (of which he has two). He has Bhuddism as his religion with the Cathedral building. Cathedrals store religious art only, which he has none of.

I'm curious as to where he is keeping his great works of writing, and it doesn't make sense that I can't steal any.

I have yet to play a game (~130 hours in or so) that I have been able to find a great work to steal let alone actually steal one. Fairly certain that this must be a bug, unless someone else confirms otherwise.

Curious if anyone else has found this problem so far?

I have stolen them in the past and had many opertunities to do so. I never count how many places should be able to hold them though

Best way to steal Great Works is to steal cities that are hoarding them all.

Forget the chincy pickpocket stuff.

I promoted a spy to steal a work of art. It took me many tries to find a location, but i finaly did it.

For the achievement you need to use the spy.

Yes but the problem is that when I go to place a spy in a city, it says there aren't any great works at all. I can't even attempt to steal them because it won't even let me go to the theatre districts because there are no great works there. I have had spies with a promotion before, and even then it won't even let me into the theatre district.

so far, the only great works i've noticed that can be stolen are writing in amphitheatres or art in art museums(i haven't seen any artifacts and if i've seen music, i haven't recognized it as such). you should be able to see if something is present with any spy, not just one with the cat burglar promotion. if the great works are stored in other buildings(wonders, palace, holy sites, etc) they can't be stolen(which i hope firaxis changes in the future, along with other possible missions).

i have to agree with you that the math is not adding up, he shouldn't have enough storage for all of the great works he has, and you should be able to see 2 writings from the amphitheaters.

That's what I thought, thanks. Wasn't sure if the reason I couldn't see them was because I was missing something.

I've stolen music, so these works too.... but yeah it's strange that artifacts can't be stolen. I can understand why wonders or palace great works aren't stealable (although it would be cool if they were), but there's no good reason as to why we shouldn't be able to steal artifacts.

It's probably all of a piece with the behaviour of archaeologists, how each city can produce one and it lives until it fills that city's museum, and then vanishes - and you can't move artefacts from a museum that isn't full.

The AI is pretty generous with great works when they beg you to end the many wars they start but fail miserably at. So I haven't ever felt the need to send spies to steal them.

Yeah I don't really NEED to steal anything, I could just invade him and take them, but I am thinking it's not supposed to behave the way it is.

Figured it out, kind of boneheaded move. It turns out I didn't have an empty slot for a great work of writing. Once I moved my relic out of my palace into one of my temples, I could steal a great work. Makes sense, just the phrasing of it inferred that there was no great work available to steal.

Reading the thread this was my first thought. XD
