Sorry not trying to insult your intelligence but you say you are new to Civ just wanted to make sure you are not having a moment like we all do at some point. I found the game very confusing the first time i played Civ V.
Also have you got the latest drivers because i think both AMD & NVIDIA released new drivers just for this patch. Can you see the units during the bench test ?
Try doing a verify game cache from the steam library.
Bullet, I am sure he understands that, what hes talking about is the "army men like character models" that are on the minimap that you control and they are animated, hes saying there are no character models, not even for the settler nor the first Barbie you get, but the icons that appear above the character models are there, just cannot see the animations of them fighting, I just ran into this issue today, and all drivers are up to date, and being its a fresh copy of windows with full updates my drivers and windows should not be the issues...……. so I am hoping there is a fix for this though

One of its simplifications is to give you unit icons rather than the standard animations. Is that what you are seeing, a simple drawing of a bow and arrow, for example, instead of that small animated group of archers?
Another of its simplifications is pure discrete hexagons with bold borders instead of a seamless transition. Again, the terrain features and any resources a hex might have are represented by icons, not realistic depictions of the terrain or resource.
If this describes what is being seen, then the problem is that you somehow got strategy view toggled on. Just toggle it off if that suits you better.
