Venetian Arsenal: one of the best wonders?
At first, I thought the two naval units per naval unit you build was confined to the city you built the wonder in -- nope! It's civ-wide. It's freaking OP and I love it.

Yup, I recently discovered this as well. Fantasitc on an island plates map.
Except on most maps and most civs, where building a navy is basically worthless.

As far as I can tell, unless you play on islands, there's no reason to ever build a coastal city or ship. Period. I'm 76 hours in and have not built a single naval unit... the coast may as well be toxic fallout.

You don't have to build a coastal city to still build a harbour district. The best cities for your internal traders are always those with a harbour district as that's an extra +2 production for routes to them.

Besides that ships have their uses.
Beside, building some harbours is the very good way to increase your trade routes. More trade routes mean more gold, science, and culture. It also make other cubs like you more in term of diplomacy.

Oh yes you are right, I forgot that Harbours also give an extra Trader per city, how silly of me to overlook that BIG thing lol.
Harbors have nothing to do with the topic - which is a wonder that gives you more ships (or if you want to look at it like this: more production when making ships). Which is utterly without value unless you want a military victory or are on an island map. Topic, is this wonder super-awesome? Not often.
Considering that most of the island maps i have tried end up with multiple unconnected oceans.... Yeah its pretty ♥♥♥♥

needa a nerf sorta with england. she can tear ur as sup
Coastal cities aren't as common in Civ 6, that's true, but the battleships and destroyers can be used to bombard city centres up to 3 squares in, so they aren't quite useless. It would be good if the ai could be improved to use the air and sea more. A couple of bombers and a battleship or 2 and they completely lose the plot.
I think that England/Victoria's ability to get a free military unit whenever you build or capture a city on a different land mass (continent) than the starting continent, is pretty nice (I got about 4 swordsmen that way). I expect that the Redcoats will be nice also once I get the tech/civic for them, I am not sure how useful Sea Dogs will be on an island map, as I have not gotten to them either yet. But the improved Archealogical Museum with two Archealogists could be nice.

I have a religion of my own (as Victoria) plus I captured another religion's founding Holy Site by conquering Greece who had two cities on a seperate island.

All I know is I was playing as Japan on an Island Plates map against my friend whow as playing as Norway. Now Norway is pretty awful- except for their unique galley. He spawned 3 of those and took over the Aztec capital early. By the late game he had snowballed into one heck of a navy.

Meanwhile I took advantage of the insane production adjacency bonuses Japan got and built the Venetian Arsenal pretty quick, and then spammed frigates for days. I surpassed him very very quickly. It's a powerful wonder, it's just incredibly situational.

Just to clarify, in this game, continent and landmass aren't synonyms (much like the real world). There are several continents even on a Pangaea map.
Just FYI, I play this game only against AI's, so I tend to play with them a bit. I don't play to win, but to be the best, so it's just fun to get a huge Navy very easily so I can feel powerful.
Theres only one map where its not useful, inland sea, that sea is so tiny compared to landmass
And even then it is still worth getting to get unlocks for techs way faster, the one for three privateer eureka. Always get it for that one. Build arsenal, build two privateers, er i ment 4 privateers, tech unlock and friendly with that annoying nors guy always blabbering bout ships, you happy now?
