Ik this is an old post, so u probs already know by now, if you still play the game.
The terms of efficiency, the ways to convert cities rank as follows:
1) winning Theological combat near foreign cities- this is by far the best. If you can catch a few missionaries or Inquisitors near their home turf (it is pretty easy to lure AI Inquisitors to fight where they don't get bonuses) and crush them with a Debater Apostle (never ever expend all charges on a Debater, fight with them and heal them whenever possible you get much better mileage from that than from charges), you can quickly flip several cities at once.
2) Apostle charges- Particularly if you get a Proselytizer or Translator, these are the only practical choice for converting high population foreign cities efficiently.
3) Missionaries- honestly I never use them unless I see a cluster of low population cities without a religion already. They're a waste of Faith in most circumstances.
4) Religious Pressure- as I said, this is a very slow process, even with trade routes and bonuses from picking tenets that boost it, it takes centuries for much of anything to happen, and you'll probably never make noticeable progress toward a Religious win because of it.
Anyways, yea.. good to know you learned all the stuff you need to know. lol
Huh. With debaters, I usually spend the first two charges and then keep the apostle fighting for the rest of the game. Is there a difference between a debater with 3 charges and one with just 1 charge?
