The EULA isn't new (hasn't been changed since May 2018...) and is no different from any other major game company. It's just so damn broad so that it covers every single activity that Take2 (parent company of 2K Games, parent company of Firaxis Games) does. So it lists a huge amount of data it can collect if you provide it to them. For example because you go the 2K Games Webshop and buy a game there.
You never had to give up any rights.
I am talking about the ToS and EULA. I am more talking in general with most companies not just 2K/Firaxis. I forget what the ToS and EULA 2K/Firaxis has.
Firaxis/2K usually take the silent approach to this kind of situation. I don't necessarily agree with it but I understand their reasoning. Anything they try to say will be misinterpreted, it'll be seen as them giving excuses to hide their devious plan to steal our data, steal our souls and sell to the devil or whatever people think Firaxis/2K is doing by this point. You can't reason with ignorance. The best they could do is change the EULA so it's more clear on its intent but even that can and probably will be misinterpreted. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
Valve is the one who should do something. Their steam reviews system is easily weaponized against Devs. Sometimes that is justified, other times it isn't. When it isn't, it can really hurt the devs, who last time I checked are people too. Firaxis/2K can take the hit since Civ is a juggernaut that won't be taken down so easily. Smaller, indie developers don't have the same luck.
Its a thing, and people fall for it every time.
