'balanced' start positions
I set the option for start positions to be 'balanced' and I ended up starting in the middle of the ♥♥♥♥ing tundra and the Japanese started in a lush grassland with some nice hills and forests with plenty of resources.

What the ♥♥♥♥.

And then I started building the Oracle wonder only to immediately discover it sits upon a tile of iron.

ehh there are some serious issues with the way the game picks start positions and how far it will place you from other civs, but knocking out a wonder before you even have bronze working is all you.

What's the problem with having built the Oracle on iron? You should still get the iron, of course you will have lost on a good production tile.

balanced start positions applies to the strategic resources not the terrain type

I would still get the iron? Didn't know that.

Well the unbalanced part is that my city is starving pretty much from the start with no ability to build farms.
i get what youre saying. tundra tiles dont have any food production. and having to move your settler to look for a more prosperous position would set you back a couple of turns
I thought you'd only get the resource from placing your city atop resources, not other districts /wonders?

I think you do get the the resources when they show up. but only in an undeveloped format. They best why is to look at resources line to see if it shows up. In the cases i seen, it does.

The balanced start or most of them seem bugged. I started in the middle of mountain ranges and i set game up for no mountains.

So restart the game.. the map generation is rng so expect sometimes you'll get bad starts and sometimes good ones, sometimes great ones. It's like the horses issue.. start with horses is great for later gameplay.. but it means barbs get horsemen in early game and can seriously mess you up.

Did you know there is a useful bug on the builder menu - if you put a builder on an undeveloped no -resource tile that has a hidden harvestable resource, the harvest icon appears and is greyed out. Hovering over it tells you that you can't harvest "xxx" resource until you get "yyyy" technology.

Really? That's interesting and something I will have to remember in the future.

Well, yeah, you got the iron thanks to the balanced start.

Also what civ are you? Japanese don't have a tundra or grass bias.. they just are coastal, so if it happens to be a coast.. it's their bias.

Yeah that's the problem with tundra, you want either internal trade routes or to claim tiles outside of the tundra. Or you can play as Russia and just love tundra.

I was playing as Britain and I started in the tundra on the coast. So I at least had the coast. Just to my north once the Tundra ended was grasslands that had two city states and right to the north of the city states was Japan.

I should also state that once I realized that farms can't be made on tundra (Which was about 10 turns in, lul) I restarted and ended up in grasslands on the coast with a few mountains and two rivers with iron and horses nearby.

I won the game after I restarted.
