If a unit has enough XP to level up, it won't gain more XP for the next level until you promote them. Only after you level up the unit, it will start adding XP points for the next level.
I don't recall that happening to me, and I'm not sure about this, but I do believe that they will only have one promotion available (thus, making you lose 3 promotions). Again, not sure about this one, but I'm saying this because I've never been able to have a unit with 2 promotions at the same time.
If you try to use a Great Person ability to promote a unit on a unit that has already a promotion to spend, that GP ability will be lost.
That is incorrect. It absolutely promotes every single military unit you own. Including naval and air units.
