Flanking
I found this in the civilopedia under combat bonuses: "Remember to attack the enemy's flanks, it is their weakest point and it will also give you an advantage." In the next paragraph it discusses the "flanking bonus" (2 or more units around the target). It would seem to imply that aside from the "flanking bonus", there is a different advantage if you attack an enemy from a side it is not facing?

Not in this game. If you have 2 or more units bordering the same enemy, the game simulates "flanking" (giving + strength) because the enemy unit "has to divide its attention/positioning..." regarding multiple adversaries

I thought so, it is a poor description in the civilopedia, which I have found to be really bad for getting info.

No, it's just a melee combat bonus mechanism for adjacent units on offense, gained at Military Tradition civic (which can be very early). Flanking doesn't work on cities, but if a city center's surrounding tiles are all within opponent units' (excluding lake/coast or mountain) zone of control, city is "under siege" and cannot heal per turn, unless it has Victor with defense logistic promotion.

thats not exactly true. First, you dont have to have units on all of the surrounding tiles to siege the city. Second, sometimes you do in fact have to have a ship on a coast tile to siege the city. And by saying "siege" i am talking about stopping the city from healing.

Didn't say that you do.

Yeh, ^ "all within zone of control" is not "units on all surrounding tiles", and while mountain prevents it period, a ship on a coast can contribute, land units on land do not ever zoc coast or lake, as this depiction, there's no way to put a naval unit there to contribute to siege before a unit can be embarked there with appropriate tech. https://www.reddit.com/r/civ/comments/739jq9/what_is_preventing_this_city_from_being_under/

So all you need for flanking, is two units side by side?

yes, both adjacent to a target opponent unit.

Not quite. Your units don't have to be adjacent to each other for flanking. They have to both be adjacent to the same enemy, but don't need to be adjacent to each other.
However, flanking is only on offense. The defensive bonus is support, which is based on how many friendly units are next to the unit being attacked, and not how many units are adjacent to the attacker.
