Maximum City Size and Workers
I'm fairly new to the game so I want to make sure I understand this.
City tiles can be purchased up to 3 tiles out from the center. I got that from my other post.

Here are a few questions for the community:
1. Cities will naturally grow to 5 tiles out maximum is that correct?
2. Workers will only work up to 3 tiles out?

3. If #2 is true, what happens to farms and mines out at tile 4 and 5?
4. What about workers and cities that grow wide, really wide due to crowding?

Builders can improve tiles anywhere within your cultural border, or within the cultural borders of city states of which you are suzerain. Farms and mines in the 4th ring can still add adjacency bonuses to applicable improved tiles in the 3rd ring, but on the city screen you cannot opt to put 4th and 5th tiles into production. If there is a strategic or luxury resource in the 4 and 5 ring of tiles and you improve them you do get the benefit of those resources.

I'm pretty sure that housing from improvements beyond 3 tiles also applies to the city that owns them. Not much of a bonus but it does help.

I can confirm all the above in this last play through. Thanks.

Just to state this part ultra specifically- you get the bonus of having the resource when it comes to trading, unit production, or amenities. You do not get the benefits provided as if the tile were 'worked'. No citizen will ever assign itself and can't be manually assigned to a tile that far out.

Thanks again. Things are making sense now when I play and I’m not too worried about redeveloping a tile in the 4-5 range since it’s more often just a marginal gain unless strategic.

Chopping bonus resources or features in the 4-5 range will give the bonus to the owning city too, so don't hold back. TURN IT INTO A PARKING LOT.
