Best civ for religious victor?
What are the best civs for religious victory?

When I tried it before I neglected my science and got multi-declarations from other empires and was smashed...

I have all the DLC civs, I've been thinking of trying Indonesia or Khmer for this, not sure if they are preferred.

Strangely enough, montezuma is very good. Especially combined with yerevan so your apostles can choose one out of any promotion. Montezuma gets one military power for every luxury resource you have, and because amendities get spread towards 6 cities instead of 4 you can get a lot with just 6 cities. Somehow, that bonus of +1 str also goes towards religious units, i once had 16 luxury resources, Debater +20 and some other stuff giving me apostles with over 150 power.

Hagia Sophia + mosques give +2 spread total towards apostles.

Being Suzerain of Yerevan is very important so you can choose promotions for your apostles. With mosques this allows you to get 3 or 4 extra spreads with each apostle with getting the same promotions each time rather than once only, except those who take debater to kill enemy religious units (you need a couple of these). You can use gurus to heal the debaters but it is better within your territory to let them heal on religious sites.

Getting your religion asap is important. For that reason I would go for civs that get a wildcard government slot so you can beeline mysticism on the civics tree and start getting great prophet points early. Russia with cheap religious districts is also possible.

A nice religious "assault" team, usually consists (if you have yerevan in your game that is), out of 3 apostles, one with debater to kill stuff, one with proselytizer to remove enemy religion and translator to convert cities. Have 1 or 2 guru's with them and you should do just fine converting a civilization, especially if you have extra spreads.

Use city states to your advantage, and keep a quantity of military units to lessen the chance of war from other civs. If there is a natural wonder like Mt.Everest, make it a goal to get a city near it so your apostles etc. get the buff.

Then make sure you get the Wonders that give you faith bonuses. Keep an inquisitor, or another faith unit that can engage in combat near your "Holy City" to avoid the AI converting it by its spam of units, especially on higher difficulties.

As for other Civs, remember that Kongo loves it if you convert his cities, which if your religion benefits more from adjacent city pressure, can free up some time as nearby cities convert faster without you having to send dozens of units to convert every single city.

Definitely this. I find that keeping an inquisitor in my holy city does deter them from trying to convert it.

Arabian is the best imo.
Guaranteed Prophet and bonus to science and cultural letting you focusing on faith and religion spreading.

It is also about how you build your religion. Scripture / Monastic Isolation / Holy Order are my favs. I usually recruit more Apostles to get into combat than missionaries / inquisitors.

Trade routes also increase your religion pressure so you might want to massively trade to your opponents cities to help you out.

ANYONE is the best religious civ with Yerevan lol (except Kongo obviously, though they can get a lot of benefit from them too, just not for religious victory)

I just won a religious victory as Germany, so it can be done with almost anyone. Arabia almost destroyed my religion, so if you can be them you don’t have to fight them ;) I actually had to military war Arabia to get them off the map and use inquisitors to convert my new cities. Egypt also put up a good religious fight, but Yerevan + Mt Everest meant I could steamroll her with Debater units. I converted a city-state on her border and used the holy ground to defeat wave after wave of her units. The constant victories meant all her local cities auto-converted. Then I just moved forward and stood still while she kept losing city after city. I only converted 2 of 10 cities, the rest auto-converted. After that it was simple mop-up, with pilgrims getting +3 conversions to scoop up France, China and Kongo. Game over in under 300 turns on standard speed.

Strange, when playing religious usually nobody declares war on me, but maybe because I try to keep it pacific.

What difficulty?

Also, careful from aggressive neighbors such as Alexander, Cyrus, Kongo (I don't know why it happens to me) or a random schyzophrenic leader.

Also, try to get wonders, and save the apostoles last charge in order to engage in theological combat/get chalices.

If you want to keep it simple, play snowballing with Pilgrimage founder belief. If you aim for religious artifacts, then reliquaries is the way to go as well.

I advice you to check http://civilization.wikia.com/wiki/Religion_(Civ6) and plan properly.
