XCOM is squad tactics. I don't play with mods but the game is replayable as long as you like to do battles. It's still kinda repetitive to chain fights.
Civ 6 is, imo, the best time killer. Especially with DLCs, so much factions to play, games can vary enough to make you want to start again and as already one game on normal speed takes several hours to beat....
Total War is more about big battle and grand strategy.
I haven't played Stellaris.
XCOM2 is the least sandboxy, so it obviously has the least potential (though it can still last for many, many hours).
They're all DLC-tastic.
Stellaris is probably the least newb-friendly, but it's not that hard. CIV6 (or 5) is probably the best for "casual" afternoons.
TWW2 is the only one with an RTS element (in the battles), the rest are turn-based. However, if you want hundreds of hours of play you'll probably need both of the Warhammers for access to the combined campaign.
Have you already played XCOM 1? Theone from 2013 I mean, not the original orginal (though that is great too but with dated graphics).
Have you already played Civ 5? Most say it is better than Civ 6.
Have you already played Civ 4: Conolization? That with the R&R mod is still my go to game after all of these years. Have poured thousands of hours into it and never get bored of it.
Have you already played Dawn of Discovery? Another great game that has aged very well.
I'd take any of the above over Civ 6.
Stellaris is great, but has a very steep learning curve. It isn't the best choice for a casual/new player.
Stellaris was good until the 2.0 CherryH update that literally ruined the game by changing every important aspect of the game. Prior to 2.0 your territory grew naturally similar to the Civ games. it didn't take 8 billion years to travel around the galaxy, you could have awesome large fleets that are visually a fleet, you could declare a preemptive war on species that are not adjacent to you, battleships were actually great because they had high damage reduction.
Post CherryH and the game is just ♥♥♥♥. It takes 8 billion years to travel around the galaxy because now ships have to travel through EACH solar system to use the hyperlane to get to the next solar system which means it takes 45+days or more to move through a single solar system, you can only send military ships into solar systems that you have have already sent a science ship to, you can only acquire new territory by paying influence to build a space station in the solar system which means it takes for ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ever to make a large empire which you can't really do because you will never have enough influence as influence accrues at the rate of 2 influence per month, you can only declare war on a species that has territory directly touching your territory, Corvettes are now super OP as armor no longer provides damage reduction so the Corvettes with a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ 70% base evasion rate are the only ships which can reduce damage by evasion tanking and all weapon sizes basically do the same damage now that there is no damage reduction from armor. There is a HARD cap (idiots call it a soft cap but it is absolutely a hard cap) on fleet size regardless of your empire size. A small empire can have the same fleet cap as a large empire which makes no ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sense. Basically CherryH feelsl like it was made solely to force everyone to have a small empire and ♥♥♥♥ over everyone who wanted a large empire by making it nearly impossible (due to the cost and method of acquiring territory now) to do so and completely pointless to do as fleet size is capped.
Having played Total War Warhammer 2 for a bit I can't help but think that Medieval Total War, Shogun 2 and Rome 1 are all better Total War games.
Grand Strategy is just a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ marketing term when it really means 4X game.
For me XCom2 is the winner. I played this game the most of all of the above mentioned.
But bear in mind that I consider the WOTC expansion a must have because it adds so many cool new things. Also the mod support and community is great.
NAme your own team, name them after friends and family and send them into action. Cry when they die! Cheer when they win with incredible luck or your foresight!
Stellaris:
Grand tripple X game with cool stories and taks woven into it. Its fun to play but might be a bit difficult for a newcomer at first.
civ6:
I had high hopes for this one after having player civ 5 for countless hours, but soo after it came out, I stopped playing it. They didn't improove anything, they just changed stuff and not for the better. CIV 5 felt more ccolossal like you were really crafting the path of your epic civilisation hile in civ 6 with its comic graphics it just feels meh ,,,
warhammer 2:
I now only play the grand campaign, but I quit my playthroughs very soon because the time it takes for a turn is just so ridiculously high. There are also things that annoy me like the 20 stack armies where everyone just runs around with a 20 stack and its always 20 stack vs 20 stack so you can't go cheap units and envelop them or something like this unless you have two 20 stack armies and attack at the same time which is a pain in the ass at least for me, so I end up building one template army after another and winning the game. Or I am getting annoyed by armies spawning in my hinterlands out of thin air, wrecking my economy while my armies are engaged elsewhere. I really like the battle mode, but the grand strategy layer is *barf* to me.
Both I think are great in their own respect, though Civ6 has some balance issues to iron out, it is still a very fun game and is a bit more indepth than stellaris on economics. (also what is going on with not allowing larger map sizes?) ((because the modded maps are getting broken)).
Stellaris I think I enjoy more, though, it's mostly because it gives more options to use in war like vassals, and the dlc practices I think are better (as only the host has to have the dlc for the group). Stellaris is routinely being worked on whereas Civ6 gets some updates but not as regularilly as Stellaris.
The 2.0 update of Stellaris is a great improvement towards strategy, they just need to iron out warfare a bit.
Civ6 is an improvement with districts, city states, allies in Rise and Fall, and a lot more unique stuff for civs, so there is good stuff.. they just have major balance issues among other stuff that holds it back from Civ 5.
Xcom2 once played is re-playable however many elements repeat so declines in value, but it will take you a while to get there. Not 4x so varies from other games mentioned.
Stellaris is very replayable and fun. It is most fun when in expansion stage I find (can last a very long time mind you) and then the wars become more about streamlining your economy and outtech/building your adversaries, more about mass producing a killer stack. Still fun but not as.
Civ6 is a great game. Actually havent played rise and fall dlc yet, just going to try it out finally. Classic 4x done right. Completely turnbased.
Warhammer 2 is fantastic. It has only one world map but is so replayable since every faction is completely unique and virtually a new game. The battles are quite cool and visreal, your troops and heroes fight for their lives in glorious melee, and the magic is very well balanced. World level is a seperate very good game in itself.
Personally I'd say xcom2 probably starts you off slow enough its newbie friendly, and you eventually get everything anyway so progression isnt that important at normal skill level. But my favorite is hands down Warhammer 2, just an amazing game. Played at normal skill level its fine, and dont worry about starting over since so much fun is really in the battles anyway, you dont need to complete the world goals to enjoy it fully.
