Canal placement
I was trying to connect the lake on the west to the sea on the east, through that plains plot northwest of Larsa (see screenshot), but it won't allow me.
What am I missing, here? Why can't I build a canal there?

The Canal must be built on flat land with a Coast or Lake tile on one side, and either a City Center or another body of water on the other. A single canal passage may go either straight, or bend 60 degrees; three-way canals are not allowed.
Could the Canal being adjacent to the City Center mean that it would be creating a three-way canal, which isn't allowed?

i think because canal isn't twisted left 45 degrees, but straight, and straight would not point to a coast tile, but a jungle on plains hill.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Damn, I was missing the 3-way thing. It has to be it.
I'll have to do a workaround, then.

Thanks.

No, a canal can bend.
The problem with the plains tile is that it connects two bodies of water and your city. It can only connect one body of water and your city OR two bodies of water.

I was too late, my apologies.

I wonder what would happen if a canal was built in that location and THEN the city was placed there? Maybe you just can't settle the city?

Yeah, with the city where the harbor is (canal built by a different city before that city was placed).

I was just finalizing my test on that, now that I had a bit of free time.

Yes, that's what happens. It allows to found a city and, albeit graphically it gets messed up, you can sail in all plots (sea->canal->lake; lake->city->sea; etc).
