That said it can be a life saver, I played as korea and got 2 dark ages.. and was leader in religion, culture, domination and science for the entire game.. I was fighting colonial wars in like modern era with all 7 other civs. And still got 2 dark ages, followed by 2 heroic ages.. any other civ I chose, I'm usually golden ages all the way. But playing peacefully to start with, barb camps and the odd wonder is about all you get access to. Unless you pick science based eurekas all the time. That said, dark age then heroic age isn't a bad way to play.
