What triggers the next era?
I;m currently running around with Medieval tech (knights, crossbows) but I'm still in the damned "Ancient Era" (haven't had eras trigger or switch over yet)... what the hell is supposed to cause a new era to start? I figured researching technology would cause a new era to start but I'm still in the ancient era despite having far more advanced tech

First era has 40-60 turns on standard game as shown in era panel in the right upper corner.

Ahh ok. Guess I just vastly out-scienced the game then.. im playing on marathon and at around turn 100 so it still might take awhile i guess

It's based on overall advancement of all civs. The number shown on the era page is I believe just a loose estimate based on everyone's current progress, which is why said number can be so vague. One time it was a 10-90 turns for me, I've stopped paying much attention to it since then. If you play with a low number of civs and really push for science or culture early on, you can cause a really early world era shift and send most AIs into a dark age.

seems like it's always 40 to 60 turns per era (standard speed), which is probably scaled to other speeds linearly (20-30 on quick, 60-90 epic, 160-240 or something on marathon?)

i guess the actual progress of the civs may influence if it uses the upper or lower end of that turn range.
