Trades connection, use of religious agent such as missionary, religion charactertisitcs that provide increase in % spread. It is not as good as it was from Civ V IMO.

How's pressure of nearby cities?

Read the section "Spreading a Religion", then click the link "Theological Combat" and read that page.

Each city of your religion in range puts out +2 pressure (which I think drops to +1 after a certain range). Your Holy City is +4. The religious themed governor can increase a city by 100%. One of the beliefs you can choose for your religion adds 25% (50% once you get Printing).

You can see the pressure and citizens on any city by either selecting a religious unit, or the Religion filter view, and then clicking on the icons under a city name to expand it. It shows how many people of each faith, as well as incoming and outgoing pressure.

Poorly.

Its probably WAI but its very difficult to deal with a moron AI that builds 5 citys on top of each other near you. That is, is difficult to deal with them via religion, they can be a pain to convert if the AI is feeling serious about religion. A couple of tanks can solve the problem, of course.
Debaters are the religious version of tanks.

I found this link useful. It describes how a city keeps a tally of all incoming pressure from each religion and uses the results to calculate how many citizens follow a particular religion. https://www.reddit.com/r/civ/comments/6ht169/i_think_i_figured_out_how_civ_6_religious/?st=jq3k1r8v&sh=20a6266c . It is not perfect, as it is still not clear how Pantheon citizens slowly reduce. I suspect a minimum amount of religious pressure is required for each citizen..
