normally, you need a military academy to build new units as corps or armies directly - there's dropdown arrow to select if you want to build the unit as a normal unit, a corps or an army.
i guess the ikanda unlocks that ability right away, long before anyone else can unlock it by building a military academy.
the "get corps and armies faster" thing means that the 2 conceps are shifted to earlier civics for the zulu. normally you need nationalism for corps and mobilization for armies, but the zulus can make corps and armies with earlier civics (mercenaries for corps and nationalism for armies i think)
Note don't do this on melee units- as they get upgraded when they capture a town so use unupgraded units to capture will quickly turn all your single units into armies. This works particularly well with tanks!
If you have a tech upgrade make sure you do this before taking the city so that you don't end up having to pay to upgrade the full army.
Shaka gives the ability to make corps with mercenaries and armies with nationalism that is sooner in the Civic tech tree and +5 bonus strength to corps/armies.
Zulu gives the ability to build corps and armies outright if you have the required civic and an Ikanda built and free corps/army upgrade for capturing a city. Note tech is required.
