Missionaries and religious pressure
Just wondering if missionaries and apostles spread religion passively when in proximity to cities or if you have to use their spread ability?
Also how do you increase the religious pressure of your cities. Build more religious buildings?

You have to use their spread abilities. All else is pressure.

Or win Theological combat (with Apostles or Inquisitors). Additionally a properly promoted Warrior Monk can spread religion via combat wins.

Religious pressure is relatively static. The only two ways to increase pressure are with specific beliefs, or building/converting more cities nearby. The only other way you can hope to increase your influence is if they happen to send a trade route to one of your cities.

Note- I'm not familiar with the new religious governor, I think he may have an ability to boost pressure as well.

Yes, that too. Worth noting, if you get an apostle promotion with +20 combat, don’t let it die.

I find it worth committing one of my belief choices to the one that increases city religious pressure by 25% (50% with printing press tech). Once I have established my religion in my early cities that seems to be effective in discouraging AI missionaries/apostles who look for easier targets.

I was in a Liberation War with another Civ over a City State Emergency, and while I busy fighting elsewhere, I had one on their Cities convert to my Religion without me doing anything (and got 3 Era points for doing it!) to cinvert that City (they had no Religion of their own).

I am starting to gain a big respect for players who asks questions politly like you do, and then say thank you....like you.

There should be an achievement for that, because its not always posters here have such good manners.

Thank YOU, Tommy Wiseau

Just a follow up, I used him tonight and his starting ability is +100% Religious pressure. He's fantastic for setting up a forward bulwark and maintaining huge pressure on a CS next door. I'm not even playing to win Religion, I just got him and one Apostle with Debater and because it's a CS the AI keeps trying to convert it, and because I'm putting 17 pressure on it (total from my empire, not just the city with the gov- I think he doubles 4 from a Holy City to 8) the AI keeps sending Apostles like moths to the flame. My one Debater has killed nearly 20 and we just hit the Industrial Age. Been a lot of fun making the AI burn Faith like crazy.
