Island Plates with a lucky start.

To add to the person above: Island Plates with High Sea Level, to increase your chances of being alone on your island. Though if you're unlucky, you'll get a tiny island because of the sea level

You can also play Earth map with true start location and choose the Civs that will show up to make sure you won't have any neighbors.

This is what I play and it generally works - but restart if you don't get enough space for 4-6 cities.

I like Australia on TSL Earth for that purpose. You're isolationist and safe from the outer world, don't have any neighbours at all (only Indonesia maybe). If someone declares was on you, your special ability kicks in. And you still have enough land to place several cities and not lag behind much in terms of deverlopment.

ATM (well, not right now, cause I'm at work) I'm playing Island plates, high sea level, enormous map size (mod for bigger maps), 6 adversaries and 15 CS to (eventualy, with a good lucky start) give enough space.
With these settings, most of the times you'll get an island for yourself (sometimes small, sometimes bigger) but sea connections to other islands with civs. But when that map without coast connections to other civs comes up... it's a delight to players who want a peaceful start. :)

I started with Gitarja and got a really big island (more like a small continent) all for myself. Half of it is tundra but with these map settings, the indonesian Kampung and God of the Sea pantheon... it's a show. :)
At the beggining of XX century I think I have around 15~20 cities of my own, had one double DoW that lasted some 20 turns until they decided they didn't want to lose more ships and back to peace.

yeah pretty much this

i know that at some point my death robots will wipe the world clean of the filthy peasants who dare to exist on my planet.

but i like to start peacefully. and i never declare war. i let them decide when their demise occurs. but i want to have had a few thousand years of R&D first. i notice in civ games if you delcare war, you are pretty much locked into it until teh game is over. but if you let the AI entities do that. then you can have peace again after you've wiped the latest idiot from the map

(Before that final assault to "clean off peasants from my planet") I usually only declare war when I'm having trouble fencing off other religions. This only occurs in the beggings of the game, until I have enough apostles and inquisitors to face it in religious combat alone.
