I have had a rough time getting into Civ 6. its been 3 years and I just finally finished my first game. I have to say in its current state it really has improved. I was still playing Civ 5 but Im sold on 6 now.

If you play Civ 6 for 1000 hours or more: probably yes. If you play Civ 6 for 5 hours or less: probably not.

If you already know you like Civ 6 and will get a lot of play out of it, then I would recommend getting the expansions. They are not must-have, but they do add interesting features.

If you aren't sure whether you will like Civ 6, then I would not recommend buying them right away. First, find out whether you will like the game. Watch some let's-play videos online, or buy the game and try it out yourself. If you end up not liking it then you save yourself some money.

Just so you know... If you buy the gathering storm expansion, you get all the gameplay mechanics of the Rise And Fall expansion, thus making the R&F expansion a civ/wonder/leader pack. If you want all those civs/leaders/wonders, great, buy them both! If you want to wait for a better sale on R&F, you could do that as well. Guess that all depends on current price/sale you are seeing.

IMO, the GS expansion really fleshed out this game very well and is well worth buying if you liked the game prior to either expansion! I also highly value the variety more civs gives you so, I would also get the R&F expansion, but like I said you could wait on that for a better sale. In the meantime you could supplement the variety via workshop civs. There are some great modders that do a wonderful job adding new Civs/Leaders.

Oh right didnt realise. I can get the RS expansion for around £10 which i think is alright even ifthe gameplay it adds is redundant with GS. thanks

The expansion is fun.... but be aware that this game is only fun with friends or singleplayer.

Multiplayer is the most toxic area where you only will waste a lot of time and never ever finish a match or never get to a later era than classic because 90% already quitted, dced or their mom called.... and never start playing good or being diplomatic during MP matches, because a lot of hosts kick you then.
(f***ing steam... i miss the good old gamespy days)

Game is better with the Expansions.

I've asked myself the same question a few weeks ealier than you and i opted for a full expansions buy. No regrets. Rise and fall really improve the gameplay and Gathering Storm improves the Diplomatic Sytem (much needed) and add an interesting climate change twist
I would only get Rise and Fall. Gathering Storm is such a joke imo.
