Why Civ VI is so boring
Every system seems to be good and every detail seems to be right but somehow the game just gets dull every time. I think I have finally figured out why Civ VI is so boring beyond turn 100. You no longer have to care about gold, because the game hands you 500+ every turn. You don't have to care about production, science, culture or district placement because everything is fine anyway. Your city is crap? No problemo, it is still good enough.

Remember the gouvernments in Civ V? It has been a while, but from memory if the other civs pick a different gouvernment than what you did, you get loyalty issues and the game is hard again. Civ VI needs something like that. It is fun as long as your actions matter, but after turn 100 you can leave all decitions to a blind cow and you will still be alright. It is too easy, not challenging and therefore boring.

I suspect another issue is linearity. Advantages that come with unlocking golden ages and science/civic inspirations tend to mean you have to follow the same course in every game, almost regardless of which civilisation you are playing.

There is a lot I like about Civ VI,. but now I tend to play only one civ every month or two in between other games to stop it feeling so same-ish.

I think the largest issue is that there isn't much of an AI for the Civ games. The linearity as previously mentioned causes the current 'AI' to simply follow their same strategy or go all out military when necessary, meaning there isn't much competition by well rounded opponents often.

I often find myself planning difficult wars after the first couple hundred turns to keep things interesting, but even then things are so one sided because of how easily I can get ahead in science.

If there was a better AI that had better playstyles to max the most relevant and competitive tiles/stats, whilst still understanding how to stay well rounded throughout the game, things would be much more interesting, both in your allies and rivals, as well as trade opportunity and border pressure from enemies with prepared military.

But Civ VI does has a system like that, if you have a different government than another empire, you can see in the relationship section of their profile that they have negative points with you because of that. Though I believe the city being crap should inflict some problems.

Personally for me, as a beginner, I've had problems with taking more land after majority of the continent has been taken. I've been forced to start wars in order to take more cities and that has prevented me from feeling any boredom so far.

are you playing on the hardest settings? cause if not try that, and try marathon games. if not, this game is probably just not for you

Jon Cuki, Marathon games are even worse for the AI. While they still stumble around with 40 science per turn and maybe 60 culture, you slowly start to steam away with 300 science and 300 culture per turn.

The strength here lies in the player being able to plan ahead, and you got a very high chance to build most of the "important" wonders. And as long as you don't get unlucky and steamrolled by the AI starting army early, and make it into an golden age after ancient area and choose to buy settlers/builders with faith -> nothing is gonna stop you anymore.

It's actually an much easier game to play on marathon, as long as you get past the possible onslaught in the beginning if starting too close to an AI.

In order to win any of the victory types we need to subdue all of the other civs. If we're going to do that we may as well just go for the domination win. So every game turns out more or less the same.

Race to a spaceship? Let's knock these other civs down so they can't beat us to it. Then we'll just go through the motions until our spaceship is complete.

Win by religion? Way too tedious, but in any event let's spam a bunch of apostles and and missionaries and send them out. Oh, and we can't really do this until we've got the world more or less under control and have enough wonders to get enough religious points to build all of the religious units.

Win by culture? We'll keep every other civ down by beating them at war while we build all of the wonders. Then we'll spam a bunch of rock bands and send them out on tour.

Win by diplomacy? Ok, well I've never really even tried that.
I think the main issue is science/culture as well as happiness.

No real issue just grabbing up more cities, it doesn't really hurt you besides what people think of you.

It's too easy to take over someone's city now, and there are little penalties in doing so if you can maintain the loyalty.

You just keep stockpiling for more science/culture.. essentially winning them by default by sheer military prowess.

this has been an issue in all CIV's except I because game ended too soon so you had to leave at least one AI or game ended with musketeers at 0 AD.

Only difference with VI and V is that the dull comes in much sooner then in previous games.

you are playing it wrong if it is dull for you

Try Civ 4: Colonization. It adds a more enjoyable aspect (development and processing of goods).

Forget Civ 4: Colonization, play the original Sid Meyers Col instead. Ten if not hundred times better, but with sad graphics. But as gameplay, this game beat even the newer Civ games, so good! :)

For me the issue is that it takes too long between turns in the mid to late game. Otherwise I'd be mostly happy.

At first I read it "play the original Sid meyers Civ instead" and was like... bro... that was a 1991 DOS game... lmfao

Fun fact, Gandhi has the highest aggression in all the civ games because in the first Civ there was a bug that if you lowered someones aggression below zero it would just rollover, starting from the highest value. So basically if you did ANYTHING nice to Gandhi, his aggression would go from 0 to 99, instantly turning him into a warmonger. They decided to continue this trend through other civ games, and make Gandhi a psycho lol.

THIS. Firaxis had ONE job in the Civ 4 Col remake and couldn't get that right. The original is far better except for the DOS graphics. There was a version for Windows 3.1 but it was buggy as hell.
