Fullscreen resolution won't work and crashes game
Changing the resolution to fullscreen with anything besides native resolution causes the game to crash. Only Borderless Fullscreen and windowed work, but both take a huge toll on performance. This did not occur before today's update.

I'm crashing as soon as the game opens with full screen.

Can't run full-screen at all on Mac.

Same.... dx11 crashing for me. But its after a few seconds of play. Can move a unit or two, than freeze and crash.

Send those crash reports, so its fixed sooner.

People, please mention the OS you're using. Also, please seperate your issues.
Crashing while in the game is something completely different from not being able to run full screen.

The crashing in game is most likely a mod issue. Turn off all community content in the Additional Content menu and press play now in the Single Player menu to see if that works.

For the full screen issues, try this:
Delete the following files from My Documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Civilization VI
  • AppOptions.txt
  • GraphicsOptions.txt
  • SoundOpts.txt
  • UserOptions.txt

That will reset your options and let you start from scratch. I'm curious if that works.

I fixed my problem on another way. Yesterday I also got a NVIDIA driver update, and something must have gone wrong. I did a completely reinstall of the drivers, now it works fine here.

But I also want to say thank you to you donald23 for your commitment and your help. I´m sure your solutions will help to fix the problems of many players here! After a official update of the game I alway play without mods, because they often cause problems in the game. Most mods need to be updated first.

For Mac users, in order to restore the full screen follow this fix :
on the Aspyr launch window (prior launching the game) go to options, then game paarmeters and check the OpenGL (instead of Metal) and also check the full screen option.
It worked for me and obviously a couple of other gamers.

Sorry for any ambiguity; my issue is as follows:

Using Windows 10 with the most recent updates, as well as a gtx 970m that is also updated to the most recent. My game will run fine if Borderless Window or Windowed is selected; when trying to select Fullscreen on any other resoluition besides native (which is 4K for me) the game selects borderless window 4k as the option regardless of what I tried to change it to. If I select a lower resolution with the Windowed option and then press Alt + Enter to make it fullscreen, the game crashes and generates a crash report. I send the report.

Forgot to mention; I don't use any mods. This is the most updated version of Gathering Storm Civilization 6; without Rise and Fall.

I went ahead and tried the suggestions in this thread; Deleting the 4 text files and trying in DX12 with the methods I listed above, the game still crashes and refuses to set a resolution other than native to fullscreen.

I tried setting a Fullscreen resolution other than native in DX11, and it works. It seems Salamander and I have the same issue.

Thanks - but that's obviously not a fix, and needs to be addressed by Aspyr. Switching to OpenGL (which is deprecated on macOS) is a bandaid; they need to fix whatever they broke with the September patch and re-enable this under Metal.

Also still looking for a real solution. Quite surprising something that people commonly do (Fullscreen resolutions other than native) is completely broken and hasn't been fixed on a AAA game in almost a month.

Same here, with DirectX 12 I'm not able to play FullScreen in 1080p.
DirectX 11 are fine, but it's not 12...

I'm playing on an Nvidia MX250, all updated to the latest versions.
